News: The Rangers Have Bought Out Wade Redden

6:45PM:  The Rangers have officially announced the buyout of Redden.

5:22PM: According to Katie Strang, the Rangers accelerated buyout of Wade Redden has been completed and Redden is now no longer part of the Rangers organization.

Redden’s cap hit of $5.6 million stays on the cap for the Rangers this season but is NOT on the cap for next season.

Redden played two years with the Rangers and two years with the Whale. He had one more year left on his contract for next season.

In 2008-09, Redden had three goals and 26 assists in 81 games. He averaged 22:20 per game that season, was a minus five and had 99 hits and 98 blocked shots.

In 2009-10, Redden had two goals and 12 assists in 75 games. He averaged 17:31 per game and had 88 hits and 75 blocked shots.

NEW YORK, January 17, 2013 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has bought out the contract of defenseman Wade Redden.
Redden, 35, registered five goals and 35 assists for 40 points, along with 78 penalty minutes in 156 regular season games over two seasons with the Rangers. In addition, Redden tallied two assists in seven playoff contests with the Rangers.
Signed by the Rangers as an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2008, Redden has skated the last two seasons with the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League (AHL), registering 12 goals and 50 assists for 62 points in 119 games. He was named team captain on March 3, 2012.
The Lloydminster, Saskatchewan native has skated in 994 career regular season contests with the Rangers and Ottawa Senators, registering 106 goals and 344 assists for 450 points, along with a plus-162 rating and 654 penalty minutes. Redden is a two-time NHL All-Star (2002 and 2004) and former NHL plus/minus award winner (2006, tie), and has surpassed the 30-point mark in nine of his 13 NHL seasons.
Redden was originally selected by the New York Islanders with the second overall pick in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft.

4:58PM: The Fourth Period reports that the Rangers have submitted the proper buy-out paper work to the NHL and are waiting for league approval to officially buy out Redden.

4:47PM: Aaron Portzline tweets that the Blue Jackets are expected to offer Wade Redden a contract when he becomes a free agent.

Portzline notes that the Blue Jackets were turned down by Redden in 2008 when he signed with the Rangers.

3:11PM: Darren Dreger says that Redden is awaiting his buyout from the Rangers and is looking forward to getting interest as a UFA.

12:08PM: Bruce Garrioch says that the Oilers, Stars, Red Wings and Coyotes will look into signing Wade Redden.

12:04PM: Bob McKenzie says that Wade Redden and Scott Gomez have both cleared wavers and can now be bought out.
