At ESPN’s NHL Draft Blog, Gare Joyce writes that there is a belief in NHL circles that the Rangers may have forced the Flames to trade Tim Erixon to them on Wednesday.
The belief is that the Flames and Erixon had a good relationship with the assumption that he would sign with them, but then his agent complained and threatened Calgary that Erixon would re-enter the draft and only leave Calgary with the 53rd pick as compensation.
Erixon’s agent gave the Flames a list of teams that he would sign with instead of Calgary, but it’s believed that the Rangers were his top choice.
Could the Rangers have worked behind the scenes to orchestrate this? Maybe. I think it’s more likely that Erixon didn’t want to play in Calgary and tried to “Carmelo Anthony” his way to the Rangers. I think that the Rangers, who had considerable interest in him in 2009, took advantage of the situation that they were presented with. Either way it’s done and Erixon is a Ranger.
