Update: 3:51PM: A full quote from Avery on being called back up, via Howlings:
“Probably not,” Avery said of a possible return to Broadway. “I’m not even going to think about it. It’s like you’re going to win the lottery. I guess some people do, but I’ve never had that mentality. … I’m just going to go on, but I can play in the NHL, there’s no question about that. But I feel like a completely different player already. I’m just relaxed. This game is all mental.”
Avery also said that he turned down a lot of money from Russia.
Update: 3:44PM: On Avery, John Tortorella told the media in Vancouver:
“We go about our business here, and I know that’s a story I’m sure that’s going to be talked about a lot, because Sean was here and very well-liked, but again I’m coaching this hockey club here. Talk to Kenny (Whale coach Ken Gernander). I don’t know what’s going on down there. So I can’t comment on it.”
“I’m not even going to think about it,” he said. “It’s like someone trying to win the lottery.”
Before flying back to NY, Avery said he had a brief discussion with John Tortorella, saying that “[Tortorella] told me it was his decision and that was pretty much it.”
Avery said that he didn’t think he got a fair shot in training camp either, “I’d say it’s pretty obvious.”
John Tortorella said that the Rangers have better players than Avery and that is why he didn’t make the team.
