On breakup day, John Tortorella said Ryane Clowe is the kind of player that teams need in the playoffs and that he would have made a difference had he been able to play against the Bruins.
Tortorella said, “he would have helped because that is the type of player you are looking for when you go through the grind of the regular season and playoffs.”
He added that the team needs more depth and was hoping that they get stronger through the lineup to be able to sustain the minutes they want to play.
Clowe said,“I’m open to negotiate to find a way to stay here. I enjoyed it here. You start to develop a bond with the team and the guys. I feel like this team has the nucleus and core and you have Hank in the net. Everyone wants to win in NY.”
He added that he appreciated how much the Rangers wanted him after he struggled at the start of the season and said “I would love to come back. It’s special putting on a Rangers jersey.”
Adam Rotter: Even though he was fired, what Tortorella said about Clowe is true. The Rangers acquired him to be a playoff guy but his injuries prevented him from making a difference there. I don’t know that the money will work out to keep Clowe, but the team needs another banger like him to add some depth and maybe some scoring.
