Awesoom That's NOT TRUE cole3244, I can and HAVE fully apreciated Ryan Callahan's "unique" skill set that he has brought to the table for the Rangers for approx 6 years!!! I have seen literally almost EVERY rangers game since the 2004 lockout, and I have watched Cally grow from a "checking line" role, into a 2nd/3rd line grinding, gritty, heart "onhissleeve"-type player....who once thought he could stop a possible goal by sliding IN FRONT OF A ZEDENO CHARA SLAPSHOT!!! 9it cost him the remainder of the reg season, and I don't think he came back 4 the playoffs either cuz we had gotten beat in the 1st rnd by the caps....(a lil' nostaglia 4 ya!! Lol) ne ways...I absolutely love(d) cally, and I wish he would have been MORE self-LESS rather than sel-FISH, as a TRUE team player, and Ranger, and CAPTAIN, has a lil bit of a consideration for the team, franchise, and your FELLOW teamtes.....its aptly called "a hometown discount".....MANY MANY truly dedicated team orientated plyrs accross the league have absolutely taken SUBSTANTIALLY LESS MONEY 2 STAY WITH THEIR TEAM, SO "OTHER" TEAM-MATES CAN SIGN BACK ON WITH THE TEAM TOO....if u think I'm "making this up", I can gladly find at LEAST 30 examples of this happening within the last 4-5 years....and I'm talking about ELITE SUPERSTAR level HIGH scoring offensive wizards and within the top 10% talents (pnt productions) in the entire NHL!!! Even all the expert analysts around all major broadcasts, all SAID THE SAME THING!!!! This is WAY TOO MUCH MONEY for an injury prone, aging (in the aspect that as he gets older, recovering from his "rough style of play" would be harder and more demandiing on his body), 25 goal 50 to 55 point player....your right that "intangibles" and work ethic, and "grit" etc are all extremely important pieces to the "puzzle", but we also need more scoring depth, and Martin St. Louis at 5.5 mill per year is an AWESOME deal 4 us!!! Cally should of accepted a 6 year deal for 5.25 mill, which is just a little less than Marty, and a lot of other "top-end" talent.....I wish Cally nothing but the best, and who knows, maybe this summer or in the future he'll come back....but I guarantee he'll b askiing 4 a LOT less now that he learned this VALUABLE lesson on his "worth" and his contract deamnds.....BLUE SHIRT PRIDE 4 LIFE!!!!

its too bad some fans don't think you are valuable unless you are scoring, to me being a blue collar type is hard to find and under valued but dolan has the same problem with the knicks you see here he wants stars and doesn't value substance and work ethic.

i hope cally does well and his talent is respected wherever he ends up.

sather has been given way too much time to produce a winner but as long as he is a dolan fav the results are secondary.

http://capgeek.com/archive/?year_id=2012 < Here is the Capgeek archive.  If you're interested feel free to look through the past seasons back to 07-08 and see how many teams that won the cup were paying over 6 mil a season to players that weren't legitimate superstars in the NHL.  I've got Brian Campbell when the Hawks won their 1st cup.  Maybe Rafalski when Detroit won but he was in his prime there and was putting up over 50 points a season a D man (which Callahan as a forward has only done once).  Rangers already have 3 guys on this team making over 6 mil in a cap hit.  Which is more than most of those teams.  I'm sorry but you can't pay that much for a guy who isn't a superstar and expect to win.  It sucks to lose Callahan but there's no way that the Rangers should have signed him to that deal and expected to compete in this league.  Simply no way. I hate to see him go, but I would have hated to see him get resigned at that $ amount.

I'm praying that in the offseason when he realizes that nobody is going to pay him what he wants, he takes a lower offer to come back.

Inevitable/ kind of knew where this was going! Too bad it comes down to the paper of society / what a shame /

Sorry to see this happen ~ Tampas got themselves a real worker! Good luck on your new hockey team!

It looks very weird seeing Cally in another teams colors...

Actually, what you are seeing is the result of kharma coming back around to smack Callahan after his ridiculous and unreasonable contract demands. Just be happy he left a fan favorite, and not as the hated albatross he would have been had the Rangers met his demands.

I like how the Vine stops just as he's about to actually step on the ice.

@cole3244 Truth is ...nobody was really scoring...They had checkers and grinders...You have a chance to get the 8th place 63 point 29 goal...=+18 and you take him.

@Kevin  Also have 53M tied up in 12 guys next season which will leave us approx 15M to fill out the other 13 spots on the roster.

@Barry Naumann Callahan is a marquee name out there especially out west. He won't be coming back to NY...Ducks, Sharks, Blues...they all wanted him. They love his grit and they already have scoring, size and strength on their rosters.

@Barry Naumann  Unless he comes back down under 6 the Rangers are done and so is he.  The way his agent worded his statements last week saying that they weren't asking for anything crazy leads me to believe Bartlett knows what the Sabres are going to offer.

@k20sauce  Wow..How do you blame an athlete for trying to make as much as he can? Their careers are short and have to make as much as they can. Didnt you ever leave a job for another that paid more?? Cally played every night and every shift for this team and you want to belittle him for wanting to get a piece of the pie that, while he was here, that pie went to the likes of Drury, Gomez, Redden, Hank, Richards, Dubi etc. ALSO Cally nor his agent never set deadline. Stupid Sather did. If he isnt signed by the deadline he will be traded. Cally NEVER said he wanted a trade. Stupid Sather went out and traded a Locker room and Fan favorite for a rental player. He once again traded the future for now. I say FIRE SATHER

@Jason Pontillo Close to it, likely get 6.6 mil back when they buyout Richards.  Still just under 20 mil cap space wise for half a team. With Moore, Zuccarello, Kreider, Brassard all due raises and Hagelin and Stepan next season.

Like I didn't know that.

If you're such a TBL fan post on their blog instead of pointing out blank obvious points.

If I have to explain what makes a franchise second rate in comparison to a major market you'd have to pay me tuition

@Frank B @k20sauce  callahan was not getting the deal he wanted here. he would have been traded in the offseason if it wasn't for st louis wanting out of tb.

Jason Pontillo
Jason Pontillo

@Kevin @Jason Pontillo  It's a lot of money to give Richards and a lot of liability on the line as well but I can't see them buying him out now with St. Louis here. Richards has to be part of the reason that St. Louis wants to be here. I hope I'm wrong but I don't see it. Estimations on the cap are to be at 68M from earlier estimations shown on capgeek at 71M due to a the CDN dropping too.

@Jason Pontillo @Jimmy P. It's a shame that Sather and staff still see guys like Boyle as a big, strong forward. We have guys like Boyle, Zuchs, Dorsett, Pouliot, Stepan, Stralman, Moores, Faulk and Carcillo as our big tough guys...That is a complete joke.

Speed, size and strength like the West and 2-3 teams in the East have will enable a team to advance in the playoffs...Please don't give me the Montreal dominance over the Bruins for an opposite example...The Habs are lightning fast all around and have a couple of real tough guys.

Jason Pontillo

@Jimmy P.  Far from a Lightning fan, more like a Rangers fan who is sick and tired of Glen Sather having absolutely no idea what he is doing in terms of building this team to be anything more than mediocre and not a real contender for anything.

You make the move he made yesterday if you're close, if MSL is what will get you over the bump and is the final piece but they're not and outside of one season where the team overachieved as a group and some individually, they have never been while he has been in control.

The fact that Glen Sather makes the personnel decisions that he has, without any type of accountability is ridiculous. While the Rangers play in a major market, we are run like a second rate franchise that has no clue what they are really doing, instead grabbing whatever looks good at the moment instead of having any type of plan.

Callahan wanted a ton of money for what he brought to the team but Sather gave up a ton to bring in MSL for what will account for not buying Brad Richards out, he's part of the reason MSL wanted to come, which leaves a ton of liability if Richards gets hurt or retires early with his toxic contract in this CBA, especially when it looked like Richards was all but bought out last June.
