Ryan Callahan

Buzz: The latest on Ryan Callahan and what Glen Sather’s top priority may be

5:14PM: The Rangers are “skiddish” on the term, seven years for Callahan, and giving him that long of a contract with all of the shots that he blocks and that he doesn’t play 82 games a year at 29, so what will he do at 34-35. The team is doing their due diligence to see what the market for Callahan is. (Bob McKenzie on TSN Drive)

12:38PM: Glen Sather started calling teams last week and asked about their level of interest in Ryan Callahan if the Rangers can’t get him signed to a contract extension. (Pierre LeBrun)

Western Conference executives believe that Glen Sather’s top priority is still to re-sign Callahan and that he was calling around to give himself some options if an extension can’t be done. Word of Sather’s calls leaking out could have been a pressure move by the Rangers to get Callahan to lower his demands if he wants to stay. (LeBrun)

The Rangers would not be opposed to sending Callahan to a team in the Eastern Conference. (ESPN NY)

Callahan’s agent says that he “retains hope” that a contract with the Rangers can get done and that he presents contract demands that he feel are “right” for his client. (LeBrun)

The Rangers are concerned about the durability of Callahan and don’t want to give him as many years as players like Dustin Brown and David Clarkson have signed. (LeBrun)

38.4% of readers think that the Rangers should trade Callahan.

35.07% of readers want the Rangers to re-sign Callahan.

@Rangersfan4life

If they sign him for 7 years he really "aint going nowhere" and will be a cap liability. It's a numbers game...you can't have Nash, Henrik, Callahan, Girardi, McDonagh and have enough cap to keep Kreider, Zucc, Stepan, Haglin etc.

@cedes @Rangersfan4life Agreed, lets not forget possibly looking to sign other FA in the off season as well. Although I admire both Callahan and Girardi, trade them both for NHL ready players/prospects to save money without watering down the talent level. Rangers need to look ahead as other younger players on the roster will be RFA's and need to be re-signed.
