Ryan Callahan

Buzz: Ryan Callahan may be “softening” his contract demands (Update)

10:26AM: Callahan’ side showed a willingness to drop the seven-year request before the Olympic break and he is looking for between $6.25 and $6.5 million per season. People on both sides sound “no more optimistic now” than they were before. (ESPN NY)

9:54AM: Callahan’s latest offer to the Rangers is six-years and and just south of $6.5 million, which is still too much money per year for the Rangers. (ESPN.com)

The Rangers are holding the line at six-years and $6 million per season. (Bob McKenzie)

9:36AM: Strang says that Callahan going to SIX-YEARS happened BEFORE the Olympic break so, “temper any optimism accordingly.” (Strang)

9:32AM: Katie Strang confirms that Callahan has come off of his request of seven-years but the two sides are still far apart on money. (Strang)

9:30AM: “Is gap enough for NYR to trade captain by Wed? Or enough for captain to want to go elsewhere? Or could 6 x $6.25M make both unhappily happy?” (McKenzie)

9:19AM: Callahan is down from his demands of seven-years and $7 million per year to SIX-YEARS and something less than $7 million, “maybe in the $6.5 to $6.75 million range.” (Bob McKenzie)

The Rangers are still looking for SIX-YEARS at $6 million, “the gap has shrunk some but still exists.” (McKenzie)

9:17AM: Callahan is down to six-years and at a number that is less than $7 million but not close to $6 million. (Bob McKenzie on TSN 1260)

  • 11:56AM: “the big thing to keep an eye on is the Ryan Callahan situation. He is the captain of the Rangers. Rangers have offered him $6 million a year times 6. He was looking for more than 7, his number has come down, he is now in the six-year range, down to a number that is less than 7 but not close to 6. Rangers have been adamant that if he doesn’t sign for what they think is fair then they will trade him.” (McKenzie, TSN 126)

8:02AM: On TSN 1050, Darren Dreger was asked if Ryan Miller will end up being the biggest name moved around the trade deadline.

Dreger responded and said “we have been talking about Martin St. Louis for a couple of days, Ryan Kesler obviously, Ryan Callahan’s name is in there. Of that group the only guy that I think is going to get traded, and he may not given how he is softening a bit in contract negotiations, is Ryan Callahan.” (Darren Dreger on TSN 1050)

After the game last night, Callahan said, “just wait and see I guess. My heart is still here and I want to be here so we will see what happens. It’s been on my mind, there is no secret there so it will be nice to get it done with and move past it.” (SNY)

Callahan said that he didn’t consider the possibility that last night could be his last game as a Ranger. (ESPN NY)

The Rangers are reportedly willing to go to six-years for Callahan, $6 million a year, while he is looking for $6.75 million per year over seven years.

Some NHL teams believe that the Rangers will get this done because they often handle negotiations like this.

We already gave GIrardi too many years and now its a possibility that the Rangers will do the same with Callahan. Its been proven that often times history tends to repeat itself. Well, if the Rangers re-sign Callahan, all the Ranger fans will be looking at Wade Redden and Chris Drury contracts and diminish results over the next several years.

I think 7 Million was way too much, but if he agrees to 6 Million then I think that won't be too bad.

Is Marc Marsella really Steve Bartlett ?

Rangers offering 6 Million he is looking for 6.25 Million, that is not a big difference. Get this done!!!!

Trade him even up for Stewart. After watching Phiily and Boston they need size on the wings.

So can people stop throwing the 7 Million number out there? Thank you.

6 years and just under 6.5 Million, get it done. Callahan coming down to 6 years is huge!!!

6 years is just as bad. How many points will he put up in 5 years from now? How many top free agents will we have to pass on because all our money is tied up in people who don't score?

That is still a terrible contract. Just make the trade.

Unless he softens down to 5 years 5.5 million he can piss off.  If the Rangers sign him for any of the numbers being tossed about he immediately becomes my least favorite Ranger.

@sithlord LOL!!!! Rangers offered him 6 million and 6 years, and he is going to lower to 5 years and 5.5 million! LOL!!!

@CryOfTheTiger Um yeah if you read he is lowering his demands, you can't fault the guy for asking for the most, and he wants to stay here.

@Marc Marsella @Robert Moretti How can you justify Callahan being deserving of a 6 year/$6M+ contract. The Guy is a 3rd liner now. in a couple of years will be a 4th liner and killing penalties. Players like that can be found throughout the league at a fraction of the cost.

@Marc Marsella @CryOfTheTiger  I'd love to keep Callahan. That said, if he wants to stay here he needs to put his money where his mouth is... so to speak...

Yes, it sounds as though he's lowered his demands from the initial $7 million+ or whatever, but that was crazy high. If he wants to be a Ranger (that is, if he likes NY and wants to make an effort to stay with a team he loves) then he needs to speak to his agent and get his head out of the clouds.

Yeah, he might be able to get 7yrs/$6.5million as a UFA, but if he wants to stay with the NYR then he needs to be realistic.

Not when you are comparing them to Buffalo.

@sithlord @Steven @Marc Marsella  Yeah I totally agree with the good riddance notion. I still think he gets traded, but maybe I am just hoping at this point. I love the guy and the heart he brings but he is only in the top 100 of one offensive category this year.... 81st with 4 PP. Just poor.

@Steven @sithlord @Marc Marsella

He'll get 7x6.5 on the open market with a non competitive team.  Any well constructed roster that is planning on competing won't have room for a 2nd/3rd line tweener who has never broken  30 goals making that kind of money.   And if money is more important to Cally than the chance to play for a cup, then good riddance.

@sithlord @Marc Marsella  He is worth 6x6 in this market since the cap will be going up. Him and his agent know this and if you think he won't get more than 6x6 on the open market you are kidding yourself. Chances are Buffalo would give him 7x6.5, not saying its a good contract but its the truth.
