BUZZ: Rangers grant permission to one team to talk contract with Ryan Callahan

Ryan Callahan6:25PM: “At least one team requested and was granted permission to speak with Stephen Bartlett who represents Ryan Callahan to gauge what his contract demands will be. All along it’s been believed that he is searching for at least seven-years and north of $6 million per season. We know that the St. Louis Blues have expressed interest and there has been talk of Chris Stewart being involved in some sort of package”  (Darren Dreger Insider Trading)

“I spoke with three team execs today who said that Glen Sather is doing this because he still wants to sign Callahan and is putting pressure on him. There are some who believe that the Rangers won’t go all the way with this trade. I should mention that Columbus is another team that has shown interest.” (Pierre LeBrun)

“Unless his contract demands soften there is a 100% chance that he is being traded by the Rangers. They are not paying what he is asking. (Darren Dreger)

Adam Rotter: When it comes to dealing Callahan, if that is the route the Rangers go, offering up a window to talk with the agent is a good idea because if Callahan can be more than a rental the Rangers will get a better package back. I think the Rangers are playing two angles here, they are trying to pressure Callahan into lowering his demands and if he doesn’t then they are working on getting the best possible package for him.

6:21PM: “For sure and that would be part of the deal. The only reason the Callahan’s name is in contract talks is because he hasn’t changed his contract talks since August. I think the Rangers will need more than Chris Stewart. One team was granted permission to speak with Stephen Bartlett who represents Ryan Callahan and that conversation has taken place.” (Darren Dreger on TSN Drive)

There is still question about whether Callahan will be a sign and trade player or if he will be a rental but if he doesn’t soften his contract demands he will be traded. (Dreger)

6:21PM: The Blue Jackets are a team that has shown some level of interest in Callahan (Pierre LeBrun)

6PM: The Rangers have granted permission to at least one team to talk contract with Ryan Callahan’s agent. That conversation has already taken place.  (Darren Dreger)

This is a bummer. Old man Sather better play his hand right with this. Cally is the heart of this team, he's given up his body every night for this team. If we get some prospects or another 4th liner and picks it will look terrible, and will be.

The hope we had in '11 as a young team with tons of potential that could compete for years if they stayed together will be a long but not forgotten memory. More rebuilding years ahead? Sure hope not.

sad day for Ranger fans...did not see this one coming, feels so sudden and now pretty much inevitable.

Probably StL since they've been talking about Stewart recently.

I feel Callahan and his agent are being very short sighted, as if he remained with the Rangers for his career he could parlay that into a career after hockey. I know thats not what you should think about but it should be a factor.

Hmmm this is getting further then I would have thought.

@Jimmy P.  Trading Cally doens't mean a rebuilding year. I love the guy but this is actually smart cap management he's not a 6 mil a year player

I'm not disagreeing it makes financial sense. My point is every move since the '11 season has put us further away from where this team should have been.

Will we get someone for Cally who means as much to this team as he does? Odds are no.

Contract negotiation is give and take. You always from a player perspective start high and work from there

Also what team in playoff contention trades their captain during a playoff race.

@Jimmy P.  Judging by the way Girardi is beasting out tonight, you would think he's about to be named the next Captain.
