Read: Dave Maloney Thinks that Michael Del Zotto Can Be Really Good

Former Rangers captain Dave Maloney was asked during an interview, with Sportsnet 590 about the Rangers defense and then more specifically, how good of a player Michael Del Zotto can become.

Maloney said, “I think he can be really good. I don’t know if he would admit who has been really good for him has been Tortorella. The coach is such a demanding character and there are players who are going to be better players when the game behind the bench demands so much. I think Michael is at a point where he has bought into what the coach demands of him and he has to stay that way. He can bring that threat and imagination that you need off the blue line”

Del Zotto was on with Sportsnet 590 on the day he decided to go to play in Switzerland and said that he was looking forward to using this year as another year to get better and become the player he wants to be.

John Tortorella said that for Michael Del Zotto to take the next step, he needs to play at a high level consistently.

Been quite a few days since posting...Works kept me busy.  The Jets sucking has kept me "busy" too.

I don't expect the Jets to keep losing this season, so it just seems ridiculous to me that Idzik would/should be fired.  Last year's 8-8 record was probably the best realistic outcome for fans, but put expectations higher for this year.  Mine included.

This team has to be remain focused on continuity and keeping/developing guys.  That includes the HC.  It doesn't sound good, but Rex must stay for the betterment of this franchise.

@Brendan Great now I can bloviate over why they aren't using Coples and Barnes together and Babin and Barnes together and Coples, Babin and Barnes together as well as bloviating over why they aren't using Coples and Babin together.

@Brendan hahah.....love that it gonna rain.....certainly helps us being that it "may" minimize some of Bradys effectiveness....and i would certainly hope we have a better running game than the Pats , especially with Ridley gone

@Wilkershakes "This team has to be remain focused on continuity and keeping/developing guys.  That includes the HC.  It doesn't sound good, but Rex must stay for the betterment of this franchise.  "

I think the majority of sane TJB posters will agree with you. Not all of them will agree on Idzik but under the circumstances that Rex wouldn't make it without retaining both, most of them would be on board with another year for both. Perhaps Rex doesn't get an extension and uncharacteristically works on his last contracted year.

But the issue is not us. It's the vocal minority that read and listen to the NY Post and Mike Francesca for all their sports knowledge who will start a virtual riot when those radio stations and tabloids bring their vilification to new levels of circuslike incompetence. And Woody Johnson will think that Joey from Bensonhurst and Bob from Queens are the typical 'Jet fan' who knows best, and will blow it up it for the fans.

@Wilkershakes i agree 1000000%...keep REx....give em one more shot with some legit corners and a QB that not horrendous

@a57se @Brendan why do people feel the need to bash the former 6th round pick whos the 5th string saftey?

@jaygo @Brendan

Unless Geno throws a pick six with 30 seconds left on the clock to uncover the spread...

@a57se @nickballs not sure Wilson has made a play in 4 years.......never knows where the ball is and likes to Wag his finger for no reason...sadly, Adams has been our best corner

@williamg1   It's quite long and will read.  Quick skim, but I would have hoped that these questions were asked during the GM interview process.  Yes, reevaluate on annual basis but also using the framework of the initial plan.  Changing things at an early stage (yes, this is still early) just doesn't seem to fit with how a good organization functions.

(I'll read through this when I have some time.  Maybe my comments change, but they're pretty general for the most part)

That is ridiculous fire him immediately after the season ends

@nickballs @Wilkershakes  ireally think Rex should go , barring a huge turnaround .  His lack of attention to offense is one reason. the stupid inexcusable penalties in every game show lack of discipline , that's another.  A  QB playing atrociously, misses a meeing before a game and still starts? That's another.  I just have come to the realization that we can't win with this guy.  we went to 2 AFC title games with Mangini's players, with rex's we haven't had a winning season since then.  like the guy, but this is business.  Bye Bye Rex

@jaygo @Brendan

The Pats would probably be smart enough to fall down just short of the Goal line...

@Tequila Joe The Pats are without their only good interior runner in Ridley. Sloppy game and rain hopefully works in their(strikethrough) our favor.

I agree this team has no discipline and that is the role of the head coach to establish discipline. Also drafting too many defense of players and neglecting the offense is been a problem for years. Rex

had a big influence there

@maynard hes putting a competitive team out there, with the 4th and 5th string corners starting

@williamg1 @nickballs    It seems ridiculous and short-sighted for an organization to rethink their whole strategy and plan less than two years in.  I want to see results and we're not getting it.  The season isn't over.  Am I confident they turn it around to be respectable in the W-L column?  Not really, but who knows.  They showed improvement against the Broncos.  Moral victories suck, but hell they aren't getting worse and hopefully hit rock bottom against SD.

Brendan

@williamg1 Give them all one more year. Live or die together, so to speak. Either keep everyone, or clean house. I don't want a GM fighting for his job with a new HC.

@williamg1 @nickballs @a57se wasnt being 100% serious about cutting him now.....but no hes not our best CB...Adams better than him...he actually looks for the ball

@greggreen @maynard  Not the issue. personal fouls, penalties, missed meetings, dropped balls are signs of not well coached undisciplined teams. this is one.

greggreen

@Wilkershakes @williamg1 @nickballs if we split our divisional games and beat the vikings and titians, thats 6 wins. maybe a shocker and get a win vs the steelers or chiefs.

7 wins with this roster and rex should be a coach of the year candidate.

The problem is in any of these winnable games geno can implode and lose them by himself.

@greggreen @Wilkershakes @williamg1 @nickballs

If you compare last season and this, the big difference in the schedule is our NFC games...

Last year we got NO, Atlanta and TB as three wins...this year GB, Det. and Chi as 3 losses.

I think the AFC West = AFC North from last year and our other two AFC games we have Tenn. again plus Pitt. whereas we had Oak. and Tenn. last season.

Brendan
Brendan

@williamg1 That's up to them to sort out, this is their problem.

If you're asking me what I'd do, I'd draft a QB early, sign a veteran and let them battle. If it's legitimately close, let the rookie start. If it's not, let him start on the bench. Rex would be coaching for his job, so hopefully he actually let's that dictate some of his decisions.

williamg1
williamg1

@Brendan @williamg1 My thing is (and like Jason talks about): how can you give them a 1 year "prove it" timeframe, while they go out and spend money in FA that will shape the organization for years to come? That would make absolutely NO sense.

a57se
a57se

@Brendan @williamg1

Isn't Rex coaching for his job is part of the problem?

How much patience can you expect the HC to have with young players if his job is truly on the line?

a57se
a57se

@williamg1 @Brendan

ZACKLY.

Brendan
Brendan

@williamg1 Because the money they sign players to will be structured the way they did with Decker and it will take a new GM one season to clean out the crap?

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se I don't understand how that would be part of the problem. I mean, every coach coaches for his job every season with a few exceptions. But Rex can't take the long approach if he has an obvious "win some games or you're gone" situation.

joemustgo
joemustgo

@Brendan @williamg1 Wouldn't having a lame duck GM and HC limit their ability to attract quality FAs unless they egregiously overpay them?

williamg1
williamg1

@Brendan @williamg1 But Idzik will be deciding who the next QB is (unless he really thinks Geno will be the long-term answer. If that's the case, he should be fired right now). So you let Idzik draft a QB with a top draft pick -- even if he's on a 1 year leash? He will be making a decision that will affect the franchize for many, many years to come.

Brendan
Brendan

@joemustgo Not necessarily. And we're getting way too ahead of ourselves. There's still ample time to turn the ship around and finish strong so they're not seen as lame ducks.

Brendan
Brendan

@williamg1 I let him draft whoever he wants in R1. I'm not dictating that he has to take a QB, but if they're given an opportunity to take a top QB prospect, take him.
