Read: Why The Rangers Had To Trade Marian Gaborik

At ESPN NY, Katie Strang writes that the most critical element to the Rangers trade of Marian Gaborik wasn’t felt in April but is being felt now as the team looks to secure players for the future.

Gaborik has a cap hit next season of $7.5 million and the Rangers have Ryan McDonagh, Derek Stepan, Carl Hagelin and Mats Zuccarello as RFAs and Ryane Clowe will be a UFA.

Cap Geek says that the Rangers have just over $14.1 million, including Brad Richards, in cap space next season, when the cap goes down to $64.3 and saved around $2.5 million by moving Gaborik.

Adam Rotter: Once it was decided that the salary cap was going down for this coming season, Gaborik’s chances of being a Ranger in 2013-14 were slim. Had he been scoring during the year, the Rangers would have kept him for the playoffs and started to entertain trading him now as a way to clear enough space to re-sign their RFAs. The team made the decision that Rick Nash was going to be who the offense was built around and there just wasn’t going to be enough money to allow Gaborik to stay and also keep Derek Stepan, Ryan McDonagh and the rest. The Rangers got three important pieces for Gaborik and while they only saved $2.5 million, every dollar will be important to get everyone signed.
