News: Rangers Sign Arron Asham

According to Josh Yohe, the Rangers have signed Arron Asham.

Yohe says that Asham has signed for two years and $1 million per season.

He had eight fights last season and five goals and 11 assists last season for Pittsburgh. He had 95 hits last season.

Yohe adds, “Asham really wanted to stay in Pittsburgh, but Pens didn’t make offer. Good deal for him. Has now played for every Atlantic Division team. All my favorite fourth-liners are in New York. Ash. Rupper. Time to move to New York, perhaps. Two of the best guys ever.”

Adam Rotter: Bias aside, and Asham historically has not been a player I have liked, I understand but don’t love this move. Asham is a veteran and most likely the replacement for Brandon Prust. He provides some toughness and was a teammate of Mike Rupp’s in 2010 in Pittsburgh. He has gone over the line in the past (see below), something that Prust never really did, but he is effective at what he does. It’s the cost effective option of keeping a similar kind of player to Prust in the lineup.

Asham was suspended four games in the Penguins first round series against the Flyers. One game will carryover from the suspension into next season.

NEW YORK, July 1, 2012 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with free agent forward Arron Asham.

Asham, 34, skated in 64 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins last season, registering five goals and 11 assists for 16 points, along with 76 penalty minutes. He notched a goal while making his 700th career appearance on October 20 against Montreal, which began a stretch of points in four of five games through October 29 at Toronto (one goal, three assists over the span). Asham recorded his 200th career point with an assist on December 16 at Ottawa. He also skated in three playoff contests with the Penguins.

The 5-11, 205-pounder has skated in 756 career games over 13 seasons with the Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders, New Jersey Devils, Philadelphia Flyers, and Pittsburgh Penguins, registering 92 goals and 114 assists for 206 points, along with 940 penalty minutes. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Asham will be the first player in NHL history to have skated for all five current Atlantic Division teams once he makes his debut with the Rangers.

Asham established career-highs in goals (15), assists (19), points (34), shots on goal (114), and power play goals (four) while skating in 78 games with the Islanders in 2002-03. He also tallied single-game career-highs in assists (four), points (five) and plus/minus rating (plus-four) that season, on March 25, 2003, at Chicago. Asham registered 12 points (five goals, seven assists) in the final 13 games of the 2002-03 season.

In postseason play, Asham has recorded nine goals and eight assists for 17 points, along with 50 penalty minutes in 62 career games with Montreal, NY Islanders, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh. He established career-highs in games played (23), goals (four), assists (three), points (seven), shots on goal (32), and plus/minus rating (plus-four) with Philadelphia in the 2010 playoffs. In the 2011 playoffs, Asham led Pittsburgh in goals (three) and tied for the team lead in points (four).

Asham made his NHL debut with Montreal on November 28, 1998, against Pittsburgh. He recorded his first career point with an assist on December 18, 1999, at Toronto, and notched his first career goal on December 29, 1999, against Ottawa.

The Portage La Prairie, Manitoba native was originally selected by Montreal as a third round choice, 71st overall, in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.

Whenever they switch to a game break and a bomb TD is thrown, I always think "we don't have a WR that can get that separation and catch that bomb" -- and then the next play is Geno, buying time, looking downfield, and tucking it under.

A game breaker at WR is so sorely needed...

How good does it feel to knock the Dolphins out of the playoffs?

:-)

Geno played better but still missed some key throws.  I hope he can improve next year.  Milliner is improving, those 2 Ints will help his morale, thought he still has a way to go.

Great result considering there was no Ivory for almost 3 Q's.

Geno's running was a major difference in the game....but would he last a season with that exposure?

Can we please get a TE in the off season and send Cumberland out to pasture?

Miliner has a lot of work and learning ahead.

Winters looked good today.

Did we even get 1 sack today?

Ryan coming back?  Seriously?  And this is why the Jets are always a losing organization.  They always have a clueless owner who keeps hiring clueless coaches.  Ryan is the PROBLEM!!!  He has no idea how to be a good head coach.  How is it that the owner doesn't see that the Jets faced a string of bad teams down the stretch?  How is it that the Jets' owner doesn't see that if they had a good head coach that they would have won more games.  The team had more talent than people think.  It was Ryan's lack of head coaching ability that held them back.  He was clueless about Mark Sanchez, and clueless about Geno Smith.  Woody Johnson should just mind his business, in regards to GMing the team (because he knows nothing about football), and allow the GM to do his job.   Now I know why fireman Ed gave up on this time.  I'll be doing the same thing I did when the NY Mets allowed Omar Minaya to stick around, STOP WATCHING THEM, AND STOP BUYING TICKETS TO WATCH THEIR GAMES.  Both organizations have clueless owners which cause them to never win the big game (Superbowl, World Series).  These owners need to sell their teams to people that have a clue about sports.

Cut Mark, Tone, Restructure Cro, sign Bryd, sign Boldin or Britt, sign Anothny Spencer, draft Marquies Lee, Austin Jenkins, Prince Shembo, Bryan Stork, and some lb and online depth

I normally don't think like this, but looks like Jets will have 17th or 18th pick instead of 12th or 13th. That's a costly win.

@DarrolRayFanClub

Ha, you are funny! You conveniently forget all the plays where Geno just didn't throw the ball or where he made lousy throws to WIDE open receivers downfield. 3

Bent documented several of them through the course of the season and there were others as well.

@McGeorge Short of being in the playoffs ourselves, knocking out the Dolphins is the best!

@McGeorge The Jets need one of the great QBs in this coming year's draft.  Geno isn't the answer, trust me.  Ryan and ownership are too clueless to understand this need.

@Jwelhaus   Oh  got it, you are sarcastically imitating a moron fan, who probably never played football beyond Pop warner and doesn't understand one thing about football.  Well done, had me there for a moment.

@Jwelhaus  "These owners need to sell their teams to people that have a clue about sports"

You think this team was a playoff-talented team that should have won 10 games and competed for home field advantage. Let's end the conversation there.

@JCuratola3 Are you kidding me?  He has been playing against crappy teams.  Geno isn't going to turn out to be anything good in regards to a NFL QB.  That's why he was passed up in the first round during the draft.  Good QBs play well regardless of the talent around them.  They make the talent around them better.  See Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.  Brady had no good receivers this year, and look at what he did.  This end of the season stretch was all a mirage, and all the supporters, including the clueless Woody Johnson, of Ryan, Geno, Sanchez, etc. will be in for a rude awakening next season.  Clueless.

@dylan_f

Costly?  This was an evaluation game.   I'd rather pick 18th and keep our QB, than 12th  and draft another Sanchez type.

Plenty of talent in the high teens.  Blue chip QBs go fast.

They have a total of 12 draft picks this coming year. They can come by some of those to move up in the draft if there is something a big need. If they need to go up to 7 or 8.the Jets will have 12 draft picks and nearly 50 million dollars in cap room. I'm ready for the draft and to make some trades right now! And Gino Pro he can be the man!

@dylan_f Yeah, good thing the Jets had the 6th pick in the 2008 draft or we would have missed out on Vernon Gholston

DarrolRayFanClub
DarrolRayFanClub

@dylan_f You'd rather be 0-16?

I'd rather win this week than get those five extra slots. Miami in the postseason would make me vomit. We can move up to the 12th pick by giving up one of our comp picks in the 4th round, I'd rather be 8-8 and not watch my team lose.

This is a deep draft across all positions. If they can fill NEEDS with solid not expensive/overpriced free agents then they can just draft the BPA

It's comforting to know you have a clue and

Ryan doesn't. Makes perfect sense. Does Idzik have you on his short list as possible HC candidates should Rex fail on 2014?

JW how many times do you want to repeat the same thing and show your ignorance! Not many coaches with pull out a T wins with this O

@Jwelhaus You are comparing a rookie QB to a 36 year old veteran. As a rookie Tom Brady was the 4th string QB, unable to make the team, much less players around him better.

dylan_f
dylan_f

@DarrolRayFanClub No, nor did I say I'd rather be 0-16. But with the Jet's season essentially over before the game started, I'd rather be 7-9 than 8-8. You can't trade comp picks, and a 4th rounder isn't nearly enough to move up in the 1st round. To move up from 16 to 8 last year cost a 2nd rounder.

Look at this year's draft. 13-15: Richardson, Loutulelei, Vaccaro. All needs for the Jets. Same with 17-18 (this isn't a surprise, many teams similar needs). After 18 there would be a big dropoff for the Jets.

BDarc23
BDarc23

@DarrolRayFanClub I don't think you can trade comp picks but I agree with you. There is really not much difference in the 12-18 picks as it becomes a crap shoot at that point who is picked where.

Jwelhaus
Jwelhaus

@Omari Brown They needed one of the great QBs that will be in the draft.  And now they will be stuck with Geno and deal with him being clueless with regards to reading defenses.  The Jets always find ways to be losers.

dylan_f
dylan_f

@Omari Brown Sure. But WR is a need, and there might be 3 off the board before the Jets pick. It wouldn't be completely shocking now if they miss out on Clinton-Dix, Mosley, Watkins, Evans, Lee, Mack, and Amaro.

@a57se @DarrolRayFanClub @Jwelhaus Agreed. And with a million dollars I would not be paying my mortgage every month.

He was saying with a competent coach, they would win with the talent they had, not with the talent you wish they had.

Bernard Mclaughlin
Bernard Mclaughlin

@dylan_f yeah we're stuck down around 20 now, last year we wouldn't have been able to get any offensive players at 20 only slubs like Cordarelle Patterson at WR, Tyler Eiffet at TE, we should have thrown the last few games to get a higher pick after all getting higher picks is the goal in the NFL, not winning games!

Neil Herschkowitz

Apparently, some fans not only lack football acumen, their just crybabies. If you hate this team, call Rex incompetent, and whine non stop ....do us all a favor and become a Patriots fan.

Omari Brown

@Jwelhaus Yes but what "great" QB's are in this draft?  At the spot the Jets are picking all of the projected "great ones" will be gone i.e Bortles, Bridgewater,Carr and maybe Fales if there is a run on QB's. Im a firm believer that a mid-level QB with a great D and weapons can get the job done.
