Early this morning John Tortorella met with the media for 16 seconds following the Rangers loss to Edmonton.
At Rangers Report Carp said that Torts knew exactly what he was doing last night, “Coaches and captains who have their finger on the pulse do stuff like that from time to time. Tortorella knew exactly what he was doing. He was getting a message to his team, which really was pretty lousy and soft and disinterested and distracted. And he was doing it without having to stand there and answer questions about individuals who stunk.”
Jay Feaster, Torts’ GM from his days in Tampa told the Calgary Sun that this is a classic play from the Tortorella playbook:
“So Torts made himself the story. Rather than anyone talking about Nik (Khabibulin) or about how badly we’d played, the focus was on that Shut Your Yap-Gate! with Hitch (Flyers coach Ken Hitchcock). All premeditated. He’s a master at manipulating situations in his team’s best interests.”
Torts knows exactly what he is doing. Take the pressure off the team after an up and down trip, and a brutal game, and make himself the story. This won’t work every time, but it definitely comes in handy every couple of months.
