Buzz: John Tortorella Could Be Out Of A Job If The Rangers Lose To Boston

John Tortorella11:02AM: According to Darren Dreger, on TSN Radio, John Tortorella could lose his job as Rangers coach if the Rangers lose to the Bruins in the second round of the playoffs.

Dreger’s exact words were:

“With Tortorella you have that bombastic figure, he doesn’t enjoy dealing with the media or selling the game one bit. Thankfully for the New York Rangers they don’t have to sell the game, it’s like the Toronto Maple Leafs, you kick the doors open and you have a capacity crowd that makes tens of millions per year. In Tortorella there is a shelf life, all coaches have that, his expiration date is probably sooner than most because of how he approaches the media and his players. I didn’t like his comment on Carl Hagelin. He was blunt and honest that he stinks that that is why he doesn’t use him on the power play. That is a tough thing to say to a player who you are trying to get going, I know Milbury on NBC took issue with it, so good for him.”

“So to answer your question, if the Rangers are to be eliminated in short order by the Boston Bruins, is there a chance John Tortorella could be replaced? Yes there is a chance, absolutely. No question about it. Glen Sather made the big trade, he moved Gaborik out, prior to that they acquired Rick Nash, they aren’t done yet building this team into a true Stanley Cup contender but is John Tortorella the right coach, that management group for sure will have that discussion at the end of the Rangers season, whenever that is.”

“Tortorella doesn’t care. He could care less what people thinks. He answers how he sees fit. It is usually very honest whether you like it or not. Glen Sather has talked to John Tortorella this year about how he deals with the media. I think that was specific to, he snapped on Sam Rosen and Sam is beloved by the organization, the owners the fans, I was told that Slats had to weigh in and tell him to stop it. It lasted for what, four days? He was less surly with the media but he is back to his old ways now.”

On the Michael Kay Show earlier in the month, Tortorella said this about possibly being fired “I don’t worry about that. I never have. It’s all part of the business. If you are a coach and you are running a team you will make the wrong decisions at the wrong time and for the wrong reasons if you are trying to save your ass. If you have your convictions and think you are doing it the right way, stick with it. If the people above you don’t like it they will show you the door, and so be it. I think a number of people want my door open and to be shown the door….it doesn’t bother me.  I answer to the team. That is where my decision making is, that is where my convictions are….are we doing it the right way. I always look at the man in the mirror. I have to asses myself and I do everyday. Am I doing the right thing for the hockey team? If you are then you are okay. If people don’t agree then you are gonna get fired, so be it.”
