On MSG, Sam mentioned that Mike Richter WILL play in the alumni game but not as a goalie.
Richter had been looking for clearance from doctors to play in the game. He was worried about his old concussion symptoms coming back.
Any Mike Richter is better than no Mike Richter.
The Rangers goalies for the game are Dan Blackburn and John Vanbiesbrouck.
The game will be broadcast on Versus
Update: 7:48PM: Messier says that he DIDN’T have the shoulder surgery and that he IS playing in the alumni game.
Mess put of the shoulder surgery he was supposed to have in September because he ran in the New York Marathon and he put it off again to play in the alumni game.
I never doubted that Mess was going to play but it is nice to see it confirmed that he will. I was kind of hoping he would announce that he convinced Wayne Gretzky to play.
Original Post: Earlier today the Rangers tweeted that they had an addition to make to the Rangers Winter Classic Alumni Roster.
On MSG, Sam Rosen said that they were expecting an announcement from Marc Messier on whether he was going to be able to play in the game after undergoing shoulder surgery.
Al is going to interview Mark Messier in the first intermission and he is supposed to make a major announcement.
I wonder what it could be….
In an interview with CSN’s Philly’s John Boruk, Flyers legend Bobby Clarke was asked about the Rangers and said:
“When I came to Philadelphia during the Flyers’ third year of existence, everyone hated the Rangers and I couldn’t understand why, but from Day 1, I’ve hated the Rangers… and still do.”
As we get closer to the game I am sure that more players on the Rangers side of things will express their distaste for the Flyers. Dave Maloney has on some of the post game shows, but I am sure that others will too.
In the Edmonton Journal, Jim Matheson writes that former Rangers defenseman Kevin Lowe isn’t playing in the alumni game because of arthritis in his hip and because he wants to attend the World Junior Championships which are taking place in Edmonton.
The Rangers released their roster for the alumni game on Friday.
Lowe is the president of the Edmonton Oilers.
Larry Brooks has more on Wayne Gretzky not playing in the game at the NY Post.
Update: Larry Brooks tweets that Mark Messier hopes to play in the game but has upcoming shoulder surgery
The team also tweeted that Mike Richter was going to check with his doctors to see if he can play.

It was reported late Monday night that Wayne Gretzky was not gonna compete in the Winter Classic alumni game on December 31.
Yesterday, Larry Brooks tweeted that Gretzky has been consistent in saying he only wants to play in one of those games if it is at Yankee Stadium.
At Sportsnet though, Nick Kypreos writes that the main issue with Gretzky is his ongoing fight with the league over the reported $8 to $9 million owed to him from his time in Phoenix:
When the NHL picked up former Phoenix owner Jerry Moyes’ debt in bankruptcy, they also picked a potential fight with the greatest ambassador the game has ever seen. According to the terms of his deal, the debt owed to Gretzky is as much as $9 million. Not exactly chump change, folks.
Kypreos also, indirectly, says that he will be playing for the Rangers in the game.
I hate this, not just because it is a reason that Gretzky won’t be at the alumni game, but because I hate not seeing Gretzky really having anything to do with the league now. Hopefully it gets settled soon and The Great One is back in the league in some way soon and there will be no question that he plays for the Rangers when they HOST the Winter Classic.
Original Post: 11/21/ at 10:19PM: John Boruk of CSN Philly says that Wayne Gretzky has informed Winter Classic officials that he will not play in the Alumni Game on December 31.
Boruk tweets that Gretzky would have played if the game was in New York.
The roster is expected to be announced on Saturday before the Rangers and Flyers game.
Well it stinks, but the Rangers do have plenty of other players they can bring in to play in the game. Guess we will have to wait until Yankee Stadium to see Gretz again.
