Kris Newbury has been recalled by the Rangers according to the AHL transaction wire.
…He is the Marian Gaborik insurance since it’s unlikely that Gabby will travel with the team to Carolina.
The following quotes are from the Rangers:
John Tortorella on today’s game.
“I think our third periods have been good even when we are losing. We just haven’t made the next big play as far as putting it in the back of the net. But as far as our effort throughout the game, we had chances. We had chances right on through and the third period I thought we brought it to another level. I feel good about some of the things we did. I thought a number of players played really well, but it’s about winning a hockey game and we just haven’t been consistent enough here. We are going to ramp it up again tomorrow and start again.”
Ryan Callahan on today’s game.
“I don’t think we have to change anything that we are doing, we are working hard and getting opportunities. It’s just a matter of burying that next one, which we didn’t do today, and if that goes in you’re not sure what happens. We are working hard and executing our system and I thought today we played a full 60 minutes. We played a great game but at the end of the day we didn’t get the two points that we needed.”
Marc Staal on tonight’s game.
“We had a lot of shots on net and some opportunities to score. They just found a way to put some pucks behind us and a lot of times two goals isn’t enough to win games. We need to figure out how to get those third and fourth goals to put teams away.”
The CT Whale have tweeted that the Rangers have called up Evgeny Grachev, Michael Del Zotto and Kris Newbury.
…I assume that Del Zotto is being called up as insurance again on the off-chance that either Marc Staal gets stuck in Carolina due to weather issues or that Dan Girardi is unable to play. If it’s neither of those reasons than Del Zotto may really get another shot. He was pretty good in those two games but I still see the other six as being ahead of him right now. It’s possible that the Rangers go with seven defenseman, but I don’t see them doing that.
The next game for the Whale is this Friday so the call up of Del Zotto and Grachev could also be for them to practice during the time off for the Whale. A good idea in my opinion.
Ryan Callahan should be back on Tuesday, at least that is the plan. He could slide into the spot with Brian Boyle and Brandon Prust.
Kris Newbury has won some faceoffs, and is tough as heck, and I’m wondering if he might stick around even after guys get healthy. They sure could use a little more muscle with Derek Boogaard pretty much done.
…He reminds me a little of Brandon Prust. He wins faceoffs which is important and he fights, which as Carp notes is a good addition with Derek Boogaard likely to be out for a long time if not the whole season. He certainly has jumped Dale Weise in the lineup. With 30 assists in the AHL he does have some skill and adding that with his grit could make him a candidate to stay.
I think more than likely he will stay as a spare and swap out with Erik Christensen when he returns.
Newbury has played about 8 minutes in his two games so far. He has one shot, four hits, and 11 PIM’s including one fighting major.
He is 9 of 14 on faceoffs.
In Hartford this season he had five goals and thirty assists.
Newbury is signed through next season with a cap hit of $512,000.
…He fits the role nicely but with Sean Avery and Chris Drury? If that is a grinding line it could work but it just seems like leftover pieces added to a line. I don’t know where they would fit otherwise though and that is why they are where they are.
Andrew Gross says that Newbury will center LW Sean Avery and RW Chris Drury
Zipay says that Henrik Lundqvist is in net tonight for the Rangers.
Kris Newbury will play tonight and center the fourth line Zipay says. Dale Weise will be a scratch
Steve Eminger is the only Rangers defenseman not skating this morning.
…Getting some extra rest before a back to back
Steve Zipay says that Martin Biron is on ice at the Rangers morning skate today and says that it could mean that Henrik Lundqvist will start tonight.
…I think he should. It’s hard to take a goalie out after he plays one of his best games of the season and shutouts the best team in the league. Hank will almost certainly be in net tomorrow against the Flyers, so it becomes a question of does Biron play tonight or against Toronto this week.
