Recap: AV Squad Playoffs Edition

Alain VigneaultAlain Vigneault joined Bill Pidto on The AV Squad to preview the Rangers first round matchup with the Flyers. This premiered before game 1 of the series :

  • How does your job change when the playoffs come, “now we have to win 4 games before they do and it’s the same opponent. The job as far as getting our team ready is the same. We will show the oppositions tendencies and have a plan to counter and a PP and PK plan and then it’s up to the players to execute. Our guys have done a good job of following the directions and being on the ice and putting a strong game and we have done it under a lot of pressure. At 40 games we had 40 points and a real strong push to get 56 points in the last 42 games, almost all playoff games. For us it’s a matter of doing what we are doing and the things we have done for a long time and putting our best game on the ice.”

Recap: Alain Vigneault’s conference call today

Alain VigneaultAlain Vigneault conducted a conference call today with reporters (via Rangers Report)

  • Why didn’t you bench Pouliot after his penalties, “every situation is different and last night we are in a tough situation, a tough environment and you have to trust your players. They are always walking that fine  line between what is acceptable and what is not acceptable. I know Benny’s intentions were good, he felt that the player MacDonald had taken a dive on both of those occasions, I think it was the same player, and he just felt that he didn’t get a fair shake. Sometimes a situation might be that you need to sit down your player and address it and five him a few shifts off and others you need to let them work through it and in those instances I felt that Benny could work his way through it.”

Recap: Alain Vigneault’s post game comments

Alain VigneaultOn MSG, Alain Vigneault met with the media:

  • “There were two important penalty killings and what we got there was our goalie was the better of the two goalies and we got some big blocked shots at the right time from our PK units and that is what you need to be successful. They came at us and had a good push but we were able to respond the right way.”

Recap: Alain Vigneault’s comments today

Alain Vigneault7:50PM: Alain Vigneault joined Sam Rosen on MSG:

  • On the approach, “you turn the page and get ready for the next game. It’s a best of seven series and it’s tied, our total focus is on tonight’s game.”
  • What did you guys work on, “they are a good team and a team that has a lot of speed and skill, we need to execute better, compete a little harder and I am sure we will be all right.”
  • Did special teams let you down in game two, “we had some good looks but you need to give credit where credit is due and Emery made some big saves and was able to be the difference in the second period.”
  • On being in Philly, “it’s gonna be a lot of fun. Hockey is real competitive and both teams want to win. It should be fun from start to finish.”
  • On blowing two goal leads all around the league, “I’m not concerned what is happening across the league, I am concerned with how we play and we respect Philly, they are a strong team and we will put our best game on the ice.”
  • On shortening the bench, “it will depend on the game. The last game we were behind and you need play your offensive players and that is what we did.”
  • Any personnel changes, (smiling) “we will find out at seven…”

Recap: Alain Vigneault’s comments today about game 3, travel between NY and Philly and lineup

Alain Vigneault met with the media during the Rangers optional practice today (SNY’s Nick Licalzi)

  • On considering game 3 lineup changes, “still in the process of deciding that.”
  • What would make you decide to change, “if it’s something that I feel is better for the team.”
  • Was there frustration about not going up 2-0, “I felt some disappointment. Our guys went out with the intention of wining that game. We came out with a good start and then they had a push and they capitalized on couple of chances but we weren’t able to do it in the second. In the third, give them credit, they did a good job of clogging up the neutral zone and shutting us down and we didn’t get a lot.”

Recap: Alain Vigneault post game comments

Alain VigneaultAlain Vigneault met with the media on MSG after the Rangers loss to the Flyers:

  • Did you sense the momentum change when they made it 2-1, “not really. We knew that they were going to come out with a good game, we had a good start, it wasn’t a lot of room out there in the first, in the second, this game can be funny sometimes, I thought t was our best period of the night. we had some grade A chances, the PP had some great looks, and they scored two and we didn’t. At the end they end that was the game.

Recap: Alain Vigneault’s post practice comments

Alain VigneaultAlain Vigneault met with the media following the Rangers practice today (Rangers Report) :

  • Why has the team had success against the Flyers top line in every game, “its’ tough to answer really. Those players are so skilled and so determined on the ice and maybe we just got lucky. When you play against a line like that you need to have a plan and do the right things with the puck and so far I think we have done a pretty good job there. They have had some looks and we will need to be good tomorrow.”

Recap: What Alain Vigneault said after practice yesterday

Alain VigneaultFollowing the Rangers optional practice yesterday, Alain Vigneault said (Rangers and Rangers Report)

  • On the fourth line being effective, “well, they play to their strengths. They are honest, hard working hockey players that get pucks deep and forecheck the right way and when they do get the puck back they put it on the net and try and jam and whack at it and get it back. They are a hard working group, that foursome we have used, that rotation if you want to call it that has been real effective for us.”
  • Do you prefer to coach a 4 line team, “I would say to you that any team that has had success in the past few years has been a four line team and you have to be able to spread the minutes out and if you want to play a good tempo game you need, in my estimation, I look at the teams that have success and there are a couple of players that get extra ice time but the teams that have success on a regular basis, I’m just thinking of the Bruins now, they are able to throw four lines on the ice and do it on a regular basis.”

Recap: Alain Vigneault with Mike Francesa

Alain Vigneault joined Mike Francesa at 1:30PM on WFAN:

  •  On last night, “obviously it was a pretty good game for us. Going into the third we had a tie game and we were able capitalize on a double minor where we scored two goals and that was the difference in the game.”
  • On executing his vision, “we said going into the series that we had to play to our strengths and our strengths are that is that when it’s time to defend we defend hard and smart and when we get the puck we go north/south and we attack the opposition real quickly. That is what we did last night, we spent a lot of time through the year working on the PP. Scott Arneil, my associate coach is in charge of the PP and he spent a lot of time with both units. and Stepan’s unit was able to come up big at at big time, a pressure moment. We had killed one of their penalties a little before that and they get the double minor and get them to pay. It was the first game of the series and they had been up front with how they would play. They were gonna come at us hard. They like the chippiness to their game and a lot of pushing and shoving after the whistle and we need discipline and play whistle to whistle and that is what we did last night.”

Recap: Alain Vigneault post game comments

Alain Vigneault met with the media following the Rangers win over the Flyers (SNY’s Nick Licalzi)

Was it a complete team effort, “it was a hard game. We knew coming in what to expect and for the most part we executed fairly well. We got out of our end pretty quickly and got to spend quite a bit of time in their end. They did a good job and the game is tied after two going to the third and we kill off a big penalty and then they take a 4 min high sticking and the PP did what it has to do and produced.
