Quote: The Rangers Were Surprised With Michael Sauer

“We never thought Michael Sauer would be in New York, but he and McDonagh became a very important part of our team.”

Jim Schoenfeld to Bruce Berlet at Howlings

Just like Brian Boyle. It goes to show you that you can’t rule anyone out in training camp and that guys that you didn’t expect much from can become big parts of the team.

Gilroy also said he’s enjoying being paired with Mike Sauer because Sauer is so defensive-minded it allows Gilroy some freedom to get up ice and join the attack. One of the most improved areas of Gilroy’s offensive game is the confidence he’s showing in knowing the right time to pinch and doing it effectively.

…The is key for Gilroy. If he can count on Sauer to be there defensively and to have his back, Gilroy can focus on playing his game to the best of his abilities. He didn’t entirely get that chance paired with Wade Redden last season.

“Gilly has not played bad, but Michael is a young kid we want to develop, we don’t want him sitting around and we don’t want to send him down,” Tortorella said. “I think that [Steve] Eminger has brought some bite to our back end, and he’s played just a little bit better, so he stays in.

Andrew Gross has more at Ranger Rants

…Brooks does point out that Gilroy hasn’t played one game on his natural right side so it’s really tough on him because he has been out of position the whole time.

Eminger has been up and down, but over the last few games, he has been better and it hitting. Does anyone want him in the lineup? No. But he is playing better right now and until his play slips again, he is the Rangers 5th defenseman. As for Sauer, he needs to play and it comes at Gilroy’s expense but I would still expect them to be swapping in and out until they feel comfortable with one or the other.
