NEWS: Michael Sauer Placed On IR

Katie Strang of ESPN New York tweets that Michael Sauer has been placed on injured reserve retroactive to December 5th.

Sauer has been sidelined with a concussion suffered from a hit by Dion Phaneuf.

NEWS: Michael Sauer Has A Concussion

John Tortorella tells Andrew Gross that Michael Sauer suffered a concussion as a result of Dion Phaneuf’s hit on Monday night.

He is day to day

Well that isn’t good news. It doesn’t mean he is out for an extended amount of time like Marc Staal has been, but the Rangers are likely to be without Sauer for a little while.

What does this mean for the defense? Well, I think you need to consider splitting up Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh to give more support to Michael Del Zotto and Steve Eminger. Anton Stralman will get some time paired with Jeff Woywitka it seems like, but it will be interesting to see how much ice time they end up getting.

Read: Getting Michael Sauer Back Is Gonna Be Huge

Michael Sauer announced yesterday that he was cleared to return to the Rangers lineup for the first time since the second game of the season.

Sauer had been out with a shoulder injury and Ryan McDonagh told ESPN NY that his presence in the lineup was missed:

“It’s going to be huge for us,” said second-year defenseman Ryan McDonagh. “He’s rock-solid back there and it’s going to stabilize our back end.”

He will probably be paired with Michael Del Zotto as he has the third most ice time for defensemen and the two were paired together for the first two games. It will just be good to have him back. He is solid on defense and an important player for the Rangers.

What Michael Sauer Does

“He does the little things well, communicates really well, and is very reliable.”

Blueshirts United

John Tortorella said that Sauer was one of the Rangers key penalty killers before yesterday’s game. He sat out yesterday with a sore shoulder.

I would expect Sauer to be back on Tuesday but the team can’t afford to risk another injury by bringing him back too soon. They miss him in all situations and the defense becomes dramatically better with him in the lineup. Especially since it would probably mean that Tim Erixon can go down to Hartford.
