Joe Micheletti described Zuccarello as a “no nonsense player” who is gutsy, gritty and plays a blue collar type of game.

Derick Brassard said that Zuccarello plays much bigger than his size, “that is for sure.” (NY Times)

Brassard, in late January said on MSG, “Zucc is a shifty player with great vision. He is really strong on the puck and plays bigger than his size. What I like about Mats is that he competes every night and comes to work even for practice he always has a smile on his face and a big passion for the game and he has been one of the best players if not our best player this year. I like to play with him and Benny and I hope it keeps going.”

Buzz: Mats Zuccarello on his future and a potential long-term deal

7/30/14 | 11:56AM: Mats Zuccarello said that he would taken a long-term contract from the Rangers if it was on the terms that he wanted but right now it’s best to just go with a one-year deal. (VG)

Zuccarello said that the one-year deal had been done for a while but it was good to finally get it on paper. He adds, “I am happy” with the deal. (VG)

He adds that he has gotten indications from the Rangers that they are interested in a long-term deal but now it’s up to him to decide what will happen since he can be a free agent after the season. (VG)

Zuccarello said that the Rangers are his first choice but a deal must work for both sides. (VG)

He adds that he has proven he can play in the NHL. (VG)

Zucc110:24AM: Zuccarello said that he doesn’t think he is at the level of playing in the Premier League but did say that it was fun to play soccer for the first time in a while. (Nettavisen)

9:45AM: Mats Zuccarello took part in a charity soccer game in Norway today and former Norway coach Johan Semb said that Zuccarelllo could play in the Premier League. (VG)

Mats Zuccarello7/25/14 | 1:24PM: Mats Zuccarello signed a two-year deal with the Rangers on May 26, 2010.

He played 52 games with the Rangers over those two years and scored 8 goals and had 18 assists.

During his initial contract with the Rangers, Zuccarello was called up and sent down 5 times before breaking his wrist in 2012 and missing the Rangers run to the Eastern Conference Final.

He left the NHL for the KHL and played with Magnitagorsk during the lockout before finishing the 2013 season with the Rangers and signing a one-year deal for this past season.

Zuccarello said that when he was in Russia he wasn’t expecting to come back to the NHL after he battled for two years and then started to play “real hockey” while in the KHL. He said that it was said going to Russia because while he was happy to be playing, he thought his time in the NHL was over.  (Daily News)

He said that when the Rangers asked him to come back after his season in Russia, he wasn’t sure that he wanted to come back but his brother told him not to “be stupid” and that everyone wants to play in the NHL. (Daily News)


 

Zuccarello signed a one-year deal worth $3.5 million with the Rangers this past week.

Zucc Marty7:07AM: After searching for a 3-4 year deal, Mats Zuccarello signed a ONE-YEAR deal worth $3.5 million yesterday.

Zuccarello said shortly after that it was “brilliant” to sign for one-year and worked out for both sides right now. Zuccarello also said that he was happy to avoid arbitration for the second straight summer.

He added that with the Rangers cap situation where it is, it was best to sign for one year. He adds that it makes him a free agent next summer but he is happy to be with the Rangers and feels that it’s “my club.” (VG)

Norway’s TV2 hockey expert Bjorn Erevik expects that the two sides will work out a long-term deal and avoid Zuccarello becoming a free agent. (TV2)

Ole Eskild Dahlstrøm said that Zuccarello was pushed into a corner by the Rangers cap situation but that it shouldn’t matter because of how confident Zuccarello is as a player and his desire to stay in NY. (VG)

7PM: The Rangers have confirmed the signing.

6:19PM: Zuccarello says that one year was the best thing for both sides right now. He said that he is glad he isn’t going to arbitration. (Nettavisen)

5:52PM: The Rangers and Mats Zuccarello have avoided arbitration by coming to terms on a deal worth $3.5 million per season. (Darren Dreger)

The deal is for ONE-YEAR and the two sides will continue to work out a long-term extension. An extension can’t be signed until after January 1, 2015. (Larry Brooks)

If an extension is not agreed upon, Zuccarello will be a UFA on July 1 next summer.

  • Zuccarello had 19 goals and 40 assists to lead the Rangers with 59 points in the regular season. He averaged 17:08 per game
  • In the playoffs, Zuccarello had 5 goals and 8 assists in 17:40 per game.
  • In the regular season, Zuccarello’s Corsi was 53.8% (ES)
  • In the playoffs his Corsi was 49.9% (ES)

He was scheduled for an arbitration hearing on Friday.

Zuccarello was reportedly seeking a deal for around 3-4 years and at $4.5 million per season.

The Rangers and  Zuccarello came to terms on a deal the day before his arbitration hearing last year.

Buzz: Talks with Mats Zuccarello and Derick Brassard are ongoing

The Rangers are still in negotiations with Mats Zuccarello and Derick Brassard on long-term deals ahead of their arbitration cases on Friday and Monday. (NY Post)
