Buzz: Could The Rangers Bring In Jesper Fasth?

Jack Campbell, Jesper Fasth, Nick LeddyJesper Fasth’s team in the Swedish Elite League, HV71, was eliminated from the playoffs and Katie Strang writes at ESPN NY that the Rangers are considering bringing Fasth over to North America.

Fasth is already under contract so there would be no addition to the Rangers reserve list of 50 contracts and would also not require waivers to play for the Rangers.

Strang notes that the Rangers will need to determine whether Fasth would be best served by coming to North America or playing for Sweden, if chosen, in the World Championships in May.

Fasth had one goal and four assists in five playoff games for HV71.

In the regular season, Fasth scored 18 goals and 17 assists in 45 games.

When ranking the Rangers top prospects, both Leslie Treff at Hockey’s Future and Corey Pronman at Puck Prospectus both ranked ranked Jesper Fasth in the top ten, but disagreed on which half of rankings he should reside.

Treff ranked Fasth fourth and wrote that he has excellent offensive skills and good speed. She adds that it isn’t impossible for Fast to make the Rangers next season.

Pronman ranks Fasth 8th and writes that he is “fast” and then when in top gear he is dangerous. In contrast to Treff, Pronman writes that Fasth’s offensive abilities aren’t that impressive and thinks he could be a “quality third line winger.”

Of the two, I am definitely more inclined to agree with Leslie Treff.

Fasth’s offensive upside is high, and his speed is certainly a big factor in that. The great thing about Jesper is that he is prepared to get his nose dirty too; he isn’t one dimensional on the offensive side of the puck and his play this season has shown that. He has been a solid contributor to the HV71 ranks this year with 15 points in 20 games, and it really is a shame that injury has derailed his head of steam somewhat. Personally I feel there is top-six potential there, but a possible third-line combination with Oscar Lindberg is something that intrigues me greatly too. I actually feel Lindberg has a better chance of cracking the Rangers roster next year given the varying dynamics that he offers on the ice, but Fasth should certainly be in John Tortorella’s thoughts come training camp. One plus point, despite his current shoulder injury, is that Fasth has shown no hangover from last year’s ankle surgery. That game-changing speed is still very much there, and I have no doubt that he will continue to build on a strong first half of the season upon his return to the line-up.

In the history of the New York Rangers Draft, selecting players in the later rounds (6th round) has worked out very well for them. The list of players drafted by the Rangers in the 6th round that had solid careers in the NHL: Eddie Johnstone (1974), Tom Laidlaw (1978), Reijo Ruotsalainen (1980), Tony Granato (1982), Kjeil Samuelsson (1984), Darren Turcotte (1986) and Carl Hagelin (2007). Perhaps the best selection for the Rangers in the round 6 will be their 2010 selection of Jesper Fasth. Interesting fact leading up the 2010 draft was that Fasth did not appear on the NHL Central Scouting; which ranked European skaters available for the draft. If not for Red Line Scouting Report service; which had ranked Fasth 110 overall, most people might not have heard of him at all. Reportedly, one of the reasons why Fasth was overlooked was based on his date of birth (December 2, 1991). Apparently, being younger and undersized (5’11/165 lbs) caused Fasth to slip through the cracks.

Since being drafted, Fasth had a solid season in 2010-11 (65 games: 20 goals-22 assists) while playing against older and stronger players. Fasth has also added nearly 15 pounds to his frame (5’11/179lbs) and is currently playing for the HV71 Jonkoping Swedish Elitserien team and in four games has produced a goal.
