Read: Barry Melrose doesn’t believe the Rangers are as good as they were

Barry Melrose writes that with the Rangers losing Benoit Pouliot, Anton Stralman, Brian Boyle and Brad Richards, the Rangers “don’t look as good as the team that reached the Stanley Cup Final.”  (NHL.com)

He said that the Devils and Islanders are teams in the Metro Division that have gotten better while the Rangers have gotten worse. (NHL.com)

The Rangers have added Dan Boyle and Tanner Glass to the NHL roster with Matt Hunwick, Steve Kampfer, Mike Kostka, Chris Mueller and Chris Bourque as depth players.

The players the Rangers lost were complimentary players. They were added pieces that happened to play well and go deep into the playoffs. At this time last year the Rangers weren't even thinking Strahlman would even make the team, Pouliot was signed as a 4th liner and didn't have that good of a reg season. Boyle is six foot twenty and can't bench press 200 lbs. He gets beat up out there...Richards wasn't expected to do anything great and even before the season started he was a huge question mark. All the Rangers did this year was add younger, faster skaters with decent size. If Melrose can't see that Sather is grooming 3-4 kids below, then he just doesn't like this team...what?...oh we knew this long before last season even started didn't we?

hes right

I love how all of a sudden Pouliot, stralman and Boyle are these irreplaceable players. Give me a break. A LW who was laughed at when he was signed a D who was a tryout 2 years ago and scored 1 goal. And I can't count how many times I have read the NYR should get rid of Boyle the last few years before the SCF run this past season. I think everyone needs to get a hold of themselves these players were not that big of a loss as everyone thinks. As for Richards that had to be done. It's July a lot of things can happen from now till the start of the season. Let's get the RFAs signed then go from there. No one who is not lying thought they would make a cup run going into last season anyway.

Then they are even better then they were if that blow hard thinks that. Hey Barry how did that last coaching job go? Oh yeah that's right didn't even make it through a half of season!

He never has anything good to say about the Rangers

He's down on the Rangers NOW? Did ANYONE hear him say ANYTHING positive about the Rangers throughout the playoffs this year? LOL!!  He picked the Rangers to lose every series leading up to the Stanley Cup Finals...and then when the Rangers lost he said, "See, I told you all so!"

He has a personal thing going with Sather that goes back years that stops him from being objective about anything the Rangers do right. Pay no attention to him....the more he talks, the more respect he loses. Leave the Slicked Back Mullet alone...he needs the job.

I think Sather is going to make an impact trade for a scoring forward. Now who he tangles in the package could be anyone's guess. I could see the Rangers making a 2 for 1 deal before the end of the summer.

You've got to be kidding me. Yeah, I'm upset we lost those guys to FAgency, but they are all replacable. Stop with this Barry Melrose garbage. He's a clown who hasn't won anything. He is some "expert." What a joke.

Barry Melrose was, is and always will be an idiot.  Why listen to him?

While Melrose sucks, in my opinion, I must agree that we are much weaker. But remember the players that have left...Many times during the season when they needed to step up, they took a powder. Us reaching the finals was it's own "Miracle on Ice" for 2013-14. It's now going to be up to the coach to try and mold this new unit. Personally, I think the rangers will start strong and then fade. Maybe we will be fortunate enough to make the playoffs....but it will be very close.

i agree 100 % with melrose. and i very seldom agree with him. sather is a loser. he will never win a championship with the rangers. he hasn't won anything for what?25 years. he bought gretzky when he was with the oilers or he would not have won any championships

Barry Melrose also had the Rangers losing to the Flyers in the first round this past spring so take his opinion for what its worth ...zero.

I'm sure Barry's analysis was thoughtful, well researched and buoyed by hard work and many hours of tedious contemplation. #drippingwith...

Gary Wien. No moves that made the devils or islanders better. Are u blind. The devils got Mike Cammelleri and the Islanders went from 2 AHL goalies to Halak and a good backup on Johnson. They can score with anyone now they have a goalie. People usually call that a upgrade. Lol

Barry Melrose is a greasy haired idiot who nearly destroyed the Lightning, so why would anyone (including NBS Sports) listen to him?

From the 'everyone can see this' file. If they can add a Thornton or E. Staal they could be better than what they were, right now their C depth isn't good enough, though Lindberg has alot of promise. They should be going after Stempniak to play on the 3rd line, he can give you Pouliots production. Dan Boyle will help the pp be more productive which was a big need however. BB wasn't worth that money for a guy that does nothing during the season and has a few point spurts in the playoffs.

That's funny, people have been saying the same thing about him since 1993.

With this Cap situation, the Rangers are going to have to fill holes with young guys. The Millers, Fasts, Kristos, Linbergs and Bourques are going to have a chance to win jobs in camp.  This is going to be a very interesting year.   Hopefully the young guys come through for us

Melrose also picked the Ducks to win the cup last year. Also picked Montreal and Pittsburgh over the Rangers in the playoffs.

The Rangers are definitely not as good as last year, but neither is anyone else in the East  except washington and TB. The Isles  had moulson/vanek last year and replaced that up front with grabovski and kulemin.  yeah, they replaced the goalie with someone who is inconsistent  and still have 0 defensemen worth having beyond Hamonic. The Devs added cammaleri and havlat- but lost volchenkov and fayne on D. In my opinion, they are worse than last year or possibly even.   The Rangers will make the playoffs in the middle of the pack. The East is going to be wide open again, just like this year. The West on the other hand, has vastly improved across the board.

Facts are facts, and he isn't incorrect. As of RIGHT NOW, we lost more than what we have gained so simple math is yes we are worse.

Barry Melrose is also on record with a classic bold prediction of "Steven Stamkos will never be an NHL caliber player". So yea, long story short. Barry Melrose is an idiot who still dresses like a 16 year old who steals suits from his grandfathers closet.

Totally disagree. They've gotten a bit tougher with Glass and more offensively stable on the blueline with Boyle. Moreover, the offseason is still in progress.

yeah, well, at the beginning of this season the whole damned team wasn't "the team that reached the SCF" either... until they were....

Poulliot, Stralsy and Boyle weren't "as good" last year as they turned out to be this year.... until they were... Boyle and Pouliot had recovery seasons, and Stralman grew and rounded out this year... that points to the coach...

Truth is we dont know what we have yet..

I can see us not looking as good, but I haven't seen any moves that have made the Devils or Islanders better...

Coming from the same guy that picked the Rangers to win the cup from 1998 to 2004.

He means even before the changes happened, not now aka the roster that went to the SCF. And I agree with him. This team advanced on primarily emotion, circumstances and adrenaline, and there is a very good reason why LA, CHI and BOS are still considered strong contenders and NYR is not. Other than Hank, the team had one and done written all over it, and now with the changes you referenced, even more so.

Thanks for the insight, Captain Obvious. A) They haven't even found a viable replacement for that sizable winger on Brassard's line. B) Everywhere else on the roster, the replacements are a severe downgrade. This isn't freaking rocket science.

Didn't that series go to 7 games.......Melrose wasn't that far off....as either team could have won that series.

j_spikett

they would have won if their goalie wasn't injured

@Danny Tortorella Some people just have a hard time admitting the other area teams actually are improving. The gap is pretty close now between the Rangers and NJ. The Isles still have no D.

Barry Naumann

@Catherine T Kerrigan I think he fits in with the rest of NBC, Milbury, McGuire, Keith Jones and Eddie Olcyzk... all idiots.  On a side not if I have to hear Olcyzk talk about the cup he won with us one more time I'm going to scream.  He played one game that entire playoff run.

Michael Stewart
Michael Stewart

In both series against the Canadians and the Penguins, it could have gone either way.. Rangers prevailed, but they weren't the better team.

Except our 'gains' have yet to be quantified. What if DBoyle makes us a top 5 PP? Or JT comes in and scores 25 goals? Or Fast/Lindberg make an impact! Teams may be built in summer but games are not won. How many people here (including yourself) thought the team was way better than the previous season last summer? I would say not many. I'm not drooling over our off season for sure but it's hard to make definitive statements regarding better/worse until the games begin.

Jimmy P.

Glass is hot garbage. He's Dorsett but cheaper, that's the ONLY reason he's here.

Gary Wien
Gary Wien

@billt I think Stralman was always a bit under-rated.  He's been good for a few years.  Pouliott, obviously, was thought of as a guy that would never make it and Boyle was just a decent 4th liner.  For anyone to say those players are unreplaceable is just wrong.

The case that can be made is getting rid of Brad Richards.  Losing him does make us a weaker team.  But if someone like JT steps up, his loss can be replaced as well.  Let's face it, he wasn't the Brad Richards of a decade ago.  He was just a pure Top 3 center and we don't have a proven Top 3 center to replace him as of yet.

We're not nearly as bad as some are trying to make us out to be.  The core of the team remains.  The Zucc line is definitely going to change, but Pouliott took about 3 months to get going last year anyway.  He will be replaced.

kachook
kachook

Well you're clearly not paying attention. I hate the Isles but seriously, haven't gotten better?!? They had one of the 5 worst goalies in the league last year and now have one of the top ten. That's a HUGE improvement. Add Grabo and Kuli along with the growth of their kids and they will def be a factor if the top line and goalie stay healthy. Gotta give credit where it's due or you lose credibility.

@j_spikett  The Rangers would've shut the Flyers out if they didn't put a goalie in the net..........................tool...lmao

jayhawkey

@Jordan Donahue @Danny Tortorella  Are you out of your mind?...or just a wishful thinker? The gap is the Stanley Cup finals versus fishing in the swamp by Atlantic City. Admitting what? The Rangers will not miss those players and have the core of Cup players still there.

jayhawkey

@Michael Stewart  Rangers prevailed?.  What does it take to "prevail"? be the worst team?  2 series against "the better team"...lmao.....shoulda ....woulda ....coulda...IF my aunt had balls she would have been my uncle. Please.....stop

charlie duck sauce

@Jimmy P. He's Dorsett but much bigger, provides much more of a physical presence on the ice and doesn't hurt cap wise. Smart move if you ask me. And the part about him being hot garbage is an overstatement. He has a bit of skill but in the end is what he is - a fourth liner who will pick up where Boyle and Dorsett left off. Give me a big body who actually is a tough guy for a team in DESPERATE need of it as was seen in the Finals and I say its a win. We need guys with mean streaks not small guys who think they are mean.

@kachook  Thank God the Islanders still have at least ...1 ...fan before they move to Brooklyn or Kansas City Your team is going nowhere like they do every....every....every....every....year since Clark Gilles shaved his beard.

Michael Stewart

@jayhawkey @Michael Stewart Rangers were down 3 to 1 to the Penquins and won 3 straight to win...How often does that happen in the NHL playoffs?????Carey Price is a huge difference in goal over Tokarsky and if he did not get hurt, the Rangers would not have won in 6. That series could have gone 7 games as well. Next time, respond with an intelligent feedback, your response makes you look like an ass
