Following the Rangers 2-1 loss to the Devils, Alain Vigneault said:
On last night, “first exhibition game. There were things that I liked and things that you could tell our players were trying to apply some of the things we have been working on, some of the things we have been shown on video. There is obviously room for improvement. It was our first game, it’s the first time the veterans and young players have been able to take the rust out even though they have been working very hard on and off the ice, it’s still an exhibition game and a first step that will get better.”
On putting the puck toward the net, “I liked our shooting mentality. One of the things we will have to address is getting in front of the other team’s goaltender. We had a lot of good looks but in Schneider’s saves, they were all without traffic in front. That is one area that I know we have to address. It’s a step by step and tonight was the first step.
On Dominic Moore, “I was very impressed. That was one of the first things when Glen came in, for a guy who has been off for a full year, to come out and play the way he did. To talk to the players the way he did. I was impressed and I give him full marks for being ready to play.”
On Marc Staal, “Without staying you could tell, he was a little anxious and nervous, he didn’t give up on pucks. He talked to his partner all night long and it’s only going o get better.”
On Talbot playing against Philly, “We had planned that prior to camp. In talking with Benoit he wanted to have Henrik and him tonight and he wanted Marty and him tomorrow. We stayed with that even with some changes like Hedberg coming into camp.
On the hybrid icing, “It’s my first experience with it. For the most part all the calls that were made except for one would have been icing or no icing so if it makes it safer for the players, I am all for it.”
On Danny Kristo and Marek Hrivik, “I liked Kristo’s game tonight. I think he showed some real poise and good offensive ability. With Hrivik, you can tell that something is there so I am looking forward to seeing more from him.”
On the top line, “I thought they did all right. Considering it was the first game for them, together with me. I saw some things I liked and some other things that we will get to and improve on.
