Recap: Alain Vigneault’s Post Game Comments

Alain VigneaultAlain Vigneault, on MSG, met with the media following the Rangers win over the Panthers:

  • On the second period, “we have to continually emphasize certain things. When Florida was coming on in the second period there were two things that were happening. First we were on the wrong side of the puck and when we did get the puck we couldn’t come out clean. They capitalized and forced the play on a couple of turnovers. Our goalie made some real big saves and we were able to come 2-2 after the second.”

  • On Brad Richards, “I think, a player of his caliber and his experience. He understands that that is going to happen. He whiffed on a shot with an open net but there is still a lot of game left. You expect a player with his experience to continue to play and continue to play well and that is what he did there. That was an unreal shot that he took there that enabled us to get a one goal lead and then on the PP he made some good moves. There are no easy games in this league. Every game is hard fought from start to finish and that is what we got. It was competitive from both sides.”
  • On the PP, “I can’t comment on last year since I wasn’t here but I will say that we have spent a lot of time on that, we know the importance of that. It’s execution, winning puck battles and when you have a lane you need to shoot the puck and get some people in front of the net and the guys have been doing that and doing a good job.”
  • On the 5 on 3, “Arnie set up a few things that he wanted to do there. He works with the PP and things and principles that we like to have 5 on 4 and 5 on 3 and he did a good of setting it up and the guys did a good job of executing.”
  • On Chris Kreider, “I know he apologized after the game for putting us in that position but I am not sure what led to that.”
  • On Derek Dorsett, “Competitive player, every time he is on the ice we notice him. He does the right thing with the puck, that second effort on the goal helped us. It tied us up for us.”
  • On the third period, “You gotta win a period, that was our focus in the third. We need the two points. We are aware of that and all we had to do was win one period and that is what we did.”
  • On the defense switching in the second, “For a couple of shifts there was more, Del Zotto got caught on a couple of long shifts that led to more time in our end so Ulfie decided to spread it out more and try to get different duos working together.
