Recap: Alain Vigneault’s Comments Before The Game

Alain Vigneault

6:54PM: Sam Rosen spoke with Alain Vigneault before the game:

  • On the defense, “Players are really committed to being strong in one on one situations and outnumbering the opposition and that has allowed us to limit shots and the number of quality scoring chances.”
  • On the transition game of defense to offense, “without a doubt, two of our goals in the last game were in great defensive positioning and us breaking the puck out and scoring in their end.”
  • On Chris Kreider, “I feel the same way. He has been one of our better players and you need to give credit to the Hartford coaches and the job they did there. He got his game together and got a lot of poise and confidence.”
  • On Buffalo, “I’m not overly concerned with how Buffalo plays, We not to have a lot of energy, play fast, execute and I am confident we will do that.”

4:32PM: Following practice today, Alain Vigneault met with the media:

  • On confidence that players are starting to return, “The important parts to our team, having Hagelin back, as we saw last game gives us a skill and speed dimension that you need in this league to score goals. Hopefully he will find his stride. In Cally’s case I think we are a 7-10 days away.”
  • On Dominic Moore, “He has strained his oblique muscle last game. We are looking at anywhere from a week to ten days before he can play again.”
  • Is Brandon Mashinter playing tonight, “yes”
  • Are there other roster moves coming, “At this time, 7 of our next games are at home so we can go on a game to game basis. Hartford isn’t far away and we have 12 healthy forwards and 7 healthy D in New York and we will go with that for now.”

  • On blocking shots, “It’s an important part of the game. You need to get in shooting lanes on 5 on 5 and PK. All teams do it. It’s a big part of playing solid two-way hockey. We are no different from anyone else. If we want our defense to be good then it’s part of being a good defensive team.”
  • On Cody Hodgson, “Well, he is a good player. He has a tremendous skill set. He has, from what I remember a real solid hockey sense. He has brought that to Buffalo and has played real well.”
  • “A Kid that would figure it out. He was just a young guy when I had him. Some guys you can tell will figure it out because their work ethic is strong and they are committed to being the best they can be. You could easily tell that with Cody.”
  • On the decision to play Talbot last game, “It was back to back and there might have been, maybe 10-15% that Hank was coming off an injury. It had to do with back to back, Cam playing real well and us having confidence with him.”
  • On Henrik’s injury, “He is fine. He is good to go.”
  • “I’m looking to the fact that we are playing better hockey right now. We need to continue to improve and play good hockey so that we feel good about ourselves and our game. This is a tough league to put wins together, if you do that you give yourself a chance to win games. We want this to be a tough building to play in and for that you need to do a lot of the things that permit you to do success, “effort plays, grinding, hitting, skating, pushing teams back. If we do that we will be good.”
  • On his impressions of MSG as a visitor, “first thing to me that jumped out was the blue sweaters, the blue jerseys. It sounds ridiculous but playing the Habs and I coached the Habs before I thought that their original red ones were outstanding and seeing the blue was fabulous. Then just being behind the bench during the anthem and listening to the fans cheer. It will be a great place to be part of.
  • “Tonight I am going to have a variety of combinations. Dom was helping us on that line and on the PK and we need to find more PKers obviously.
