Recap: Alain Vigneault post game comments

Alain VigneaultAlain Vigneault met with the media on MSG after the Rangers lost to Calgary:

  • “we made some mistakes defensively. We knew coming in that Calgary was a good team with a four man rush and they proved it tonight. They got some quality chances and we didn’t do a good enough job coming back in our own zone and picking up the rush and then after the rush protecting the front of our net. That led to Grade A opps and they capitalized on it.”
  • On the Rangers chances, “we got some good looks but we scored three and that wasn’t enough tonight.”
  • Was Ramo the difference, “he made some good saves. I thought in the third we had a pretty good push and good chances and he made some big saves. In the first period they capitalized and we didn’t and that was probably the difference.”

  • Was it too wide open, “we gave them 20 something shots so it wasn’t that it was wide open on our end but what happened was the rush chances and the chances in front of the net were too high quality and that is why they capitalized.”
  • On breakdowns, “it was three times where all we needed to do was get the puck behind their defense. When you turn it over above the top of the circle and you are going one way and the other team is going the other way they will get rush chances and that is what happened.”
  • Were you surprised by the Flames, “no, we knew this team was playing well. They have a good home record lately and we knew it would be tough.”
  • On JT Miller, “I thought the second period there were some offensive opportunities he could have executed better and defensive opportunities he could have executed better and I just felt that I wanted to cut my bench a bit.”
  • On Marty St. Louis and his line, “he is trying hard. That whole line is trying hard. They had some good looks but aren’t finishing now but they will.”

No loss is good but ths was a bad one. The softee Hank et in at the end of the second was brutal! Too many breakdowns on defense! Got to move on and win the next 2.
