Recap: Alain Vigneault post game comments

Alain VigneaultAlain Vigneault, on MSG, said after the Rangers beat the Islanders:

  • On the learning curve of the Rangers system, “System is, in my estimation, is an overused word a little bit. I don’t think there was that much difference but there is some subtle differences and a lot of it is good execution and you saw tonight that our execution for the first 8-9 minutes was real sharp and then I’m not sure, and I don’t want to take anything away from them, if it was them being that good, that last half of first and the second period we had a tough time. In the third period our execution was real sharp, we were moving the puck, protecting it when we needed to protect it and we thought we had our best period of the night when the game was on the line.”

  • “This is a team we have played three times in the last five games I think it is, it’s a team that we know real well, we know their tendencies, their strengths, what we need to do against them. We have played on the ice against them, we watched a ton of video on what we needed to do. Maybe they were that good for that 25 minute stretch where we seemed to spend most of it in our own end and that is when the goaltender came up and that is as big as I have seen him come up for his this season and he made some unreal saves. Total control and permitted us to bring it to the third and we played a real solid third period.”
  • On Ryan Callahan, “I’m a big fan of Ryan Callahan and I know he wants to be here , contracts have nothing to do with me and I am hoping that both parties can come to an agreement.”
  • On the difference between being outside and being inside, “other than not needing the long johns I can’t think of anything. It was a lot of fun outside and I hope we get to do it again but playing inside this building, in front of our fans, it’s pretty good.”
  • Is it significant that the first three scorers are guys who are struggling to score,”yes and no. I think one of the reasons why we are winning on a more consistent basis is that balanced scoring from forwards and defenseman. Tonight, Dominic Moore got us a goal, Marc Staal got us involved, we need those guys chipping in for us.”
  • On Marc Staal being more aggressive with the puck, “no, like I mentioned before the game, he seems to be more comfortable and I don’t know if it’s better reading when he should go up. He is protecting the puck well, showing a lot of poise with it and I am hoping that it continues because he has been real solid for quite some time.”
  • On the fourth line, “the past three games, they have been finding a way to, with the minutes that they play, to get on the scoresheet. They had not played for a while tn the third period but that last minute and it becomes four on four, we know they will pull the goalie,  and both Boyle and Dominic Moore were out there and they play important minutes which we need from them.”
  • On Kevin Klein, “he is very dependable and is what I remember from Nashville, nothing flashy but safe and that is what we needed back there.”
