Recap: Alain Vigneault post game comments

Alain VigneaultAlain Vigneault met with the media (NHL.com) following the Rangers win over the Islanders:

  • “I see everybody staying where it’s warm.”
  • On luck, “I think in any game teams work hard and make their luck and their bounces and obviously tonight the conditions, the puck was bouncing quite a bit for both teams and it made it challenging to make plays with the puck but I felt for the most part both teams battled real hard and it was a real competitive game. We were able to put one more past their goalie than they were able to put past ours.”

  • On having an advantage because of Sunday, “I don’t think so. It didn’t take them a long time to figure out that the puck was bouncing and that it was going to be challenging to make the plays that you are normally capable of making with the puck. I do feel that in tonight’s game our response after their score really helped us in the third period. In the third we had better looks and good quality chances and were able to get it done.”
  • On Dan Carcillo, “He brings energy like we expected him to bring. He brings bite to that line, that line can give us, with Brian and Dom, can give us greasy offensive shifts in the other end and what they have done in the last little while and it’s probably why we are winning more games now is that you need contributions from your whole lineup and we are getting that line tonight, it was a huge goal tonight.”
  • On the outdoor wins, “I don’t think there is anything specific, we knew that the conditions would be a little challenging, it was a little nippy out there I don’t know how it was in the stands but it was a little nippy and we tried to play with the elements that were there. I don’t know if it was the ice or the pucks but it made it challenging for the players but for the most part I think we did a pretty good job.”
  • Do outdoor games lend themselves to non-traditional scorers, “That is a tough question. Throughout an 82 game schedule different guys have to step up on different nights for your team to be successful. It was Rupp a couple of years ago, Dom last game and Carcillo tonight and that is why we won.”
  • What have you seen from your team in the past couple of games, “Well our guys are definitely getting well prepared whichever team we are playing. We know that all the games will be tough and challenging. Even in the NJ game, which was a 7-3 game, there weren’t a lot of chances on both sides but we were able to bury ours. Tonight it was close and we were able to score one more than them. That goal Pouliot scored really helped us moving forward and into the third period.”
  • What did you learn about the team in the last two games, “We can play through cold I guess. Tonight, on some of those shots where our guys went down to block them I’m going ooooo that must hurt a bit because to say the least it was very nippy and we had some big blocked shots. Cally at one point, Marc Staal at another when they are coming right now the guy. It takes a lot of courage to do those things and a lot of courage to do them on a night like this. Our guys did it and we need to keep doing it if we want to make the playoffs.”
  • Did the focus change on Saturday to not having outdoor games but instead having division games, “the focus changed to one game at a time and we got ready for NJ, we had a game plan. Tonight we got ready for the Islanders who have given us a real tough time. That top line is one of the most dynamic lines I have seen in this game. All young players who can skate and move the puck and maybe tonight since it was a bit challenging made it tougher for them. We won the game and will get ready for our next matchup against them.”
  • How close is this club to being elite, “I don’t understand the question……Right now I think we are one of the ten teams fighting to get in. I don’t pay attention to the status we are in. We are in a one game at a time mentality and trying to win our share of games.”
  • On the team identity, “I think one of the things I know we are doing better is we are defending better and that permits us to be quicker in our transition and our transition allows us to use our speed and our speed is a big part of our game. We have a lot of fast players who push back the other teams D and we have been using that a lot better.”
  • On the PK, “PKing starts with great goaltending and we have gotten some good goaltending lately. Ulfie has been working real hard with those players. Our structure is good and guys are willing to get into lines and take away passing lanes and blocking shots that need to be blocked. When you do that you can be one of the good PKing teams in the league.”
