Read: The Second Contract Nashville Just Signed A Defenseman To

McDonaghThe Nashville Predators announced that they have signed 23-year old RFA defenseman Roman Josi to a seven-year deal worth $28 million.

Josi has played in 100 career games and has 10 goals and 22 assists.

Last season he played 23:31 per game, 2:53 on the PP and 53 seconds on the PK. He had five goals and 13 assists with a minus seven rating, 96 shots, 31 hits and 73 blocked shots.

Besides Ryan McDonagh, the following defensemen are RFAs: Alex Pietrangelo, Zach Bogosian, Kevin Shattenkirk, Slava Voynov, Travis Hamonic and Karl Alzner.

Adam Rotter: This is a different kind of contract than the one Ryan McDonagh will sign. The Predators are overpaying Josi now with the idea that in a few years, if things develop the way they see, $4 million will be a bargain for him. I think the Rangers would love to get McDonagh under contract on the exact same terms, but his agent will never go for that since McDonagh can be an unrestricted free agent in three-years.

The goal for the Rangers is to lock up as many of McDonagh’s free agent years as they can and the goal for McDonagh’s agent is to make sure that the Rangers pay a higher price to keep McDonagh under their control. It still seems like the most likely solution is the same contract that Marc Staal signed, five-years worth nearly $20 million. The Rangers get two of McDonagh’s free agent years and McDonagh gets a higher amount of money than he would if the Rangers were only offering a short-term deal.
