Scott Howson says during his press conference that Rick Nash asked Columbus to move him.
Howson said that he would try to accommodate Nash but only in a situation where he could get “cornerstone” franchise players in return.
He said that the team had “significant” discussions today but that it didn’t happen. On Nash being with the team next season, Howson says that nothing is going to change and that he is going to look at all the options around and re-evaluate during the draft and the summer.
Howson added, “we talked to a lot of teams about Rick Nash” and “the price was high. I don’t apologize for that. It had to be high”
Last season the Rangers targeted one player for months and months and tried to acquire him at the deadline. Ultimately they felt that the price was too high, passed, and signed Brad Richards in the offseason.
Rick Nash won’t be a UFA this summer but he also won’t be a Blue Jacket next season. The price is still going to remain high, but it is likely that the Rangers are still going to be interested in Nash during the summer and I think that after seeing what this team does in the playoffs, they could make another serious run at him.
At the same token, another player that they have had their eye on for a long time, Zach Parise, is a UFA on July 1.
