Read: John Moore, the salary cap and what happens next

John MooreWith the Rangers signing of Kevin Hayes (cap hit likely around $925,000 $900,000), the team has $432,500 in cap space. (Cap Geek)

  • The $432,500 includes Chris Mueller ($600,000), Matthew Lombardi ($800,000), Jesper Fast ($805,000), Michael Kostka ($650,000) and Matt Hunwick ($600,000).
  • The number does not include JT MIller who is at $894,167.

John Moore is the Rangers only remaining RFA and it’s expected that he will sign for around his qualifying offer of $850,000.

The Rangers are allowed to go over the salary cap by 10% until their last day of training camp. (CBA page 261)

Signing Hayes also puts the Rangers at the maximum of 50 contracts but the Rangers will have two one spots open up when Ryan Graves and Anthony Duclair are sent back to junior.

Adam Rotter: There is enough room to sign Moore by keeping everything as listed above but sending Chris Mueller and Matt Hunwick to Hartford.  That would give the Rangers $782,000 in cap space which isn’t a lot but gets everyone signed. The interesting thing is what the Rangers do to free up a contract spot for Moore if Graves and Duclair count until they are actually sent back to the QMJHL. They can move someone in a trade for a late draft pick just to open up a spot but they have a little less than a month to figure it out before camp starts.

Only Ryan Graves contract slides, Anthony Duclair's doesn't so the Rangers are at 50 right now without Moore signed. With Graves not sliding until the end of the camp, Hayes becoming contract 50 and John Moore unsigned, the Rangers need to make a move or two to sign John Moore. They also still don't have a guy who can fight on this team yet, plenty fourth liners who have some muscle are out there,

If we look at all the players with roaster hits (players who even if they play in the AHL still hit our cap) we have $3,987,500 available. That also leaves 5 spots left empty. Two of those need to be filled to play. The other three are healthy scratches.

@Jason Pontillo We are not a team that fights anymore. This isnt 2012. The notion of an enforcer is also proven to be dated. Chicago won a cup with the lowest fighting majors in the league.

Glass CAN fight

Klein can fight

jmoore may develop that. Two fights thus far have been impressive.

No need for strict enforcer type.

@craig You're right, I forgot about Glass. Still a move needs to be made to fit John Moore onto this team.
