News: Derek Stepan broke his jaw (Updates)

Derek Stepan12:37PM: Alain Vigneault said today that Derek Stepan broke his jaw on the hit from Brandon Prust. (Darren Dreger)

Vigneault said (via the NHL):

  • Yesterday there was an incident where Prust hit Stepan.  You know, that incident, obviously, four referees missed the call.  Stepan is injured.  The same player that called the hit on Price accidental but on purpose.  Late hit, everything that you want to get out of the game, that was his hit on Stepan. “
  • And what saddens me about that hit is, if the call is made on the ice, we’re on a 5‑minute power play, and what happened to Dan Carcillo, and what Dan did is inexcusable, and he’s going to pay a big price for it, but if the call is made on the ice, he’s not put in that position. “
  • “So it’s unfortunate.  Step right now at this time is probably getting operated on.  He broke his jaw yesterday, so we’ll have an idea of the timeframe tomorrow.  But those are stuff that happens during the game that you have to deal with, and that’s what we’re going to try to do.”
  • “Well, at the time the doctors checked him out.  I’m not sure if they did X‑rays or whatever.  Everything was done after the game and this morning and found out this morning.”

Stepan is undergoing surgery on his jaw right now. (Rangers)

  • 4:20PM: Surgery for Stepan is tonight. (Gulitti)

There is no timeline for his return.

Brandon Prust has a hearing with the NHL department of player safety later today.

Stepan was NOT happy with the hit last night.

I really liked Prust when he was a Ranger & had no grudges he was acting like an animal/playing like a Flyer though - I was pissed when that happend... Stepan & most of the New York Rangers play nice - sometimes I wish they were a little more dirty, but they don't have it in their blue blood :(

it doesn't matter! stepan should only miss 1-2 games and brass is coming back. clearly the rangers are a better team with or without steps n brass!

The only people in the NHL and Fanbase that are calling it a dirty hit is the Habs and their fans. The NHL Players Commision and even every single commentator said the Kreider hit wasn't on purpose.

Going hard to the net is a hockey play, the hit on Stepan was late and aimed at the head . Should have got at least 4 game.

But Jennifer, first answer this ... how many points is a goal worth in hockey?

I'm rooting for Rangers - Kings. Being from NY and now living in LA, that would be a great final.

An aggressive play to the net while having your right leg taken out by a defender, and with another stick towards your face = a no call. Refs got that one right. Refs completely botched Game 3. Mona, you should be sending "thank you" cards to the NHL officials. Rangers in 6.

Montreal has skills but the Rangers are faster and are playing and reading each other as team mates and fellow linesman more than they have all season...we know the game is all about how the puck bounces, where it bounces, what it hits, deflects and skips off the wall other players..the ref (lol) so that was in favor of Montreal...this game...it had a weird feel to it tight??

Tough game, mismatched teams. Montreal lost their head some time after Game 1 and turned this into a dirtfest. They got into the Rangers' (usually cool) heads in Game 3. Then again, that one was a gift from the refs. Rangers will get back to playing their game, and should have this one in 6.

And the ref was only looking ... right at the hit. Dirty hit. Non-call. Gift to Montreal. Game to Montreal. Canadians fans all know deep down that Kreider made a good aggressive play (as he was being slashed, twice) ... and that they were just handed Game 3 on a platter.

Agreed. Rangers play with class and usually, they keep their heads. Montreal has turned desperate and dirty. Just hope the refs come back down to Earth ... had they made the right call in Game 3, it probably would have been a whole different outcome.

The refs need to remove their pants and referee the game with their good eye.. after all, the ones in their heads are blind while a player gets hurt badly...

Prust has been out to injure any & all Rangers . In game two he even took a run at Lundquist during TV timeout & if Refs had made proper calls on the Ice Carcillo wouldn't of been so incenced with anger . Also 10 games for Carcillo is ridicleous as we've all seen a lot worse when refs and linesmen try to control an angry player . Also what about Subbans slew footing & swinging his stick around in final minutes . Makes one wonder what NHL's intentions are here . Even with TWO REFS & VIDEO REPLAY & THEY STILL CAN'T GET IT RIGHT ! SUSPEND PRUST & KEEP AN EYE ON SUBBAN !!!!

I cannot believe Stepan kept playing after the hit.

prust should get 10 games this was clearly intent to injure the rangers should appeal to nhl carcillio got 10 and he really did not do anything the referee initiated that the refs blew this one

Over the years, the skill level of the players has gone up dramatically, but the competency of the officiating has remained awful.  Fans of all teams agree with this.  Bad officiating is a stain on this game and is the biggest remaining obstacle for the game's popularity.  The officiating is downright amateurish at times.

Look at the other sports.  Controversial calls and non calls happen with far less frequency and certainly you never hear fans in baseball, for example, talk about the controversial officiating after nearly every single game as they do in hockey.  It's just absurd and the NHL has to address it if they want this game to grow to its fullest potential.

Officiating should NEVER become a factor in the outcome of a game.

The hit on Stepan from Puss was a cheap shot from a cheap shot!

The only thing wrong with the Prust hit was it was late. Penalty? Yes but geeze that was almost a Scott Stevens like hit. Minus having the puck. But he got him shoulder on chest and didn't leave his feet.

LOL, Price is kreider's 4th goalie, seems to be a pattern there!

Mona Rajani
Mona Rajani

Ok smartass stephen lol, kreider has a pattern of these RECKLESS plays against goalies, Price just happened to be his next target since he just happens to be a better goalie than the one the rangers have!

The officials are Soooo bad... they should be held accountable when they make the mistakes they do maybe they'll get better !!! That was a Blatent missed call !!!

Michael Kelly

The refs were not doing their job on that hit and this started the rough play, up till then it was a normal game. The refs have to control the game by calling penalties on stuff like that...

Anthony Caporuscio

how does 4 officials miss a hit in the middle of the ice when the puck had just left the area, why ?

Mona you are sooo Dumb! Go troll elsewhere and spew your garbage in your own pond!

Since when is driving to the net a " reckless play?" And since you refuse to watch what happened again, I'll tell you. Kreider beat both your defensemen bad and in order to try and save face and not look any worse then he did, your defensemen wacked Kreider in the ankle in a feeble attempt to stop him. All that did was knock Kreider off balance forcing him into your goalie. So you want to blame someone for being reckless, blame your own defensemen.

Stephen Ess
Stephen Ess

What were they suppose to do on the Price play, suspend the Canadians defenseman for tripping him?

Stephen Ess
Stephen Ess

And it's not karma when it's intentional, it's bush league hockey because they can't win it on talent.

Stephen Ess
Stephen Ess

You're right, there should have been a penalty on the Habs defensemen on the Kreider play.

Price may be equal to Lundqvist, in time we'll see. Better? no evidence to support this claim.

Exactly the refs are at fault here for they lost control of game & as every hockey fan knows when that happens players like Carcillo must take matters into they're own hands . And as we've all seen time & time again the lousey officiating always ends up punishing the recipient & not the aggressors !
