Buzz: The Rangers are telling teams that they won’t trade Dan Girardi and will sign him

1/16/14: 6:38PM: The Rangers are telling teams that they are not going to move Dan Girardi and are focused on signing him to a contract extension. (Pierre LeBrun on TSN)

LeBrun says that the Rangers are confident at this point that their negotiations will lead to a new contract. (LeBrun)

On Ryan Callahan, LeBrun says that those negotiations are maybe not as far done the road as Girardi’s and he isn’t sure that the team can get both players signed but Girardi seems more likely.

Girardi and Callahan are both pretty bad this season. Only difference is Girardi has been awful for most of his career. Would rather keep Callahan at ~4 years, but wouldn't lose any sleep if neither were around next season.

I love Cally as much as anyone but he's a 3rd liner. He's not worth Dustin Brown type money($5.8 per season). He's been injured and his style of play will continue to wear down his body.If he wants too much money, they will have to deal him and get whatever the best return on him.

@BennyD13 not at as far as with Callahan? Probably can't have both? I like that were not getting rid of him but I want Callahan

@NickDico12 I think they'll be able to get both. Callahan would take a pay cut if he needs to

@nyrfan1213Yeah, like the two players are even remotely related to performance as a Ranger.  Unbelievable...

@AdamRotter from what I have been reading lately it doesn't seem so good for us resigning cally. Or am I just being paranoid haha

They'll resign Callahan. Unless he gets injured again and misses a long stretch of games. He's the captain and with Richards likely gone at seasons end, there'd have to be a whole new leadership group chosen to lead the team. I don't know the Rangers have another player that can be the captain. Nash was in Columbus but he's a quiet guy and new to the team still. Sather has a boat load of money to spend with next years cap going up. About 33 million and that's before Richards 6.66 mil coming off after his buyout. Sather will still have enough money to sign free agent help this summer.

@PCalamari16 he is under contract for another year and has 12 starts to his name. He is unproven now. After next year probably

@AdamRotter just a thought, do you think talbot will look for a starting job given is age or do u think he'll stay as a back up ?

AdamRotter

@PCalamari16 but I do think he will get signed and for less than people think but probably for more years than people want

@PCalamari16 if he isn't signed at the draft I could see them moving him for at least something

@PCalamari16 I think it's unlikely Cally gets to July 1, whether that new contract is with the Rangers or someone else is unknown

@PCalamari16 they will only trade Cally if they are 100% sure he is going to UFA or if they get bowled over with a proposal

@PCalamari16 it's not an either or thing with Cally and DZ. They can make more than one trade. You make the trade that helps the team

PCalamari16

@AdamRotter wouldn't there be a huge controversy if they ended up trading Callahan instead of DZ. Callahan's arguably our best player, no?

@PCalamari16 I think it's a tougher negotiation with his injury issues. Ultimately, if he isn't traded I think it gets done soon after
