2/3/14:  7:15PM: “The Rangers are still trying to lock down Dan Girardi. There is a chance….a chance that it happens this week. If Girardi doesn’t come to terms this week then it sends a tough sign to the Rangers because he has earned UFA rights and he may be willing to wait until July 1 but that could throw him into the group of speculation with Ryan Callahan on the trade front.” (Dreger on NHL Live)

5:26PM: The Rangers were hoping to have Dan Girardi’s contract wrapped up this week but as of today that seems like a long shot. (Darren Dreger on TSN Drive)

Dreger says that if a deal isn’t done it could send a message to the Rangers that Girardi wants to test free agency. (Dreger)

On Insider Trading, Darren Dreger said “The Rangers need to pay attention to what is going on with Dan Girardi. If Dan Girardi doesn’t come to terms this week with the New York Rangers and avoids the potential of unrestricted free agency. Perhaps that then sends a message to Glen Sather that he is going to UFA and he then joins Ryan Callahan in the trade speculation.”

TSN Drive fill-in host Mike Hogan said that Girardi would be insane not to test UFA because there aren’t many good UFA defense, “it’s a lottery win.”

Dreger responded and said “there is no question players and agents are greedy, I get it and I believe that any player who is a pending UFA has earned that right and if that pot of gold is there on July 1 then absolutely. That said, it comes with some risk. Dan Girardi has a family, is his wife happy in Manhattan, I assume she loves NYC.”

Hogan than said that even if Girardi goes UFA he could re-sign with the Rangers, to which Dreger responded, “ehh, maybe…maybe but then it gets greasy. You end up getting traded and that sounds like a plan but this is also a playoff team and they might feel a little jilted if he played that game.”

according to Adam Rotter, he feels that the Rangers will eventually re-sign both Girardi and Callahan. He also believes that the Rangers will not buyout Richards this off season. If he is correct, the Rangers are going to have major problems when it comes time to re-sign some of their younger players who have become part of the core. I sure hope Adam is wrong and that the Rangers do not re-sign either Girardi or Callahan, because if they do, they will have another Wade Redden and Chris Drury contracts on their hands.

Trade both of them and don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out,the money they are asking for is insane for what they are.never won anything and Callahan winning the Steven McDonald extra effort award doesn't get it not for 7 million a year.Girardi wants to be a wise guy and test UFA ? Move them out and get pieces in here that can help now these guys are a joke demanding this kind of money especially since the Rangers gave them their start and especially for girardi.he was undrafted if I recall correctly.

He doesn't sign means he is going to leave if Cally is traded, one of his closest friends.

@Joe Riccio If you think you're going to get a defenseman that can replace Girardi you're nuts.  Right now, the Rangers have one of the top 3 defensive cores in the NHL -- and they're playing like one of the best.  Girardi will make a killing as a UFA.  Hopefully it won't get to that point.

@Joe Riccio  He's not worth it, but it doesnt mean we shouldnt mind if they leave. We need them, we're so close to being ready and literally lack 1 more top-6 forward before we are cup worthy, if we can just get a guy like Brad Boyes before the playoffs, who we could get cheap, we can contend for the cup. Henks contract was the ridiculous one, 8.5, that's crazy, even Stamkos makes a million less than that and an elite goalie just shouldnt make more than 7 mil ever.

@Gary Wien @Joe Riccio you've made some good points, however; the Rangers can not give in to the demands of either player. Girardi and Callahan are solid players, but they are not more important than the Rangers entire roster. It seems to me that you feel that Girardi and Callahan are the clue that keeps this team together and they are not replaceable. being  a Ranger fan for over 40 years, I can honestly tell you that if that's the case; you are absolutely wrong. If Brad Park and Jean Ratelle can be traded by the Rangers (both were lights out better than Girardi and Callahan) then these two can certainly be traded as well. In regards to your statement that the Rangers can not find another RH defensemen in the league that can absorb Girardi's minutes is also short sighted. Do you honestly think that Girardi is that good that he is not replaceable?????Also, do you honestly think Sather is going to just give either away in a trade for nothing?????Say what you will about Sather, but the fact is that he understands how to neg. and also how to make a deal. If either or both are traded, Sather will have quality coming back not just for this season, but also moving forward into the future.

@haven @Joe Riccio  What are you two talking about?  G has asked for Mid 5 numbers and a decent term.  For a top 4 shutdown defenseman, This is reasonable.  Yeah he struggled early this year but who didn't?  Hes been playing greatly lately and has been great in years past.  We cant lose Cally and G,  One of them needs to be captain.  And Gs request is much more reasonable then what Cally is rumored to want.  Replacing a shutdown defenseman is a lot harder then replacing a top 9 Forward.

@Jay @haven @Joe Riccio McDonagh will make a beter captain than either of them. Neither are worth what they are asking and if we can recoup some of the draft picks that were traded away plus a prospect or a NHL ready player then both need to go.
