Buzz: 99.9% chance Ryan Callahan is dealt/latest on Dan Girardi (Updates)

Ryan Callahan, Dan Girardi, Yankee Stadium2/26/14: 8:02AM: (Darren Dreger on NHL Live)

On Ryan Callahan, “Ryan Callahan seems unlikely even though he is the captain to agree to a contract to stay with the Blueshirts. 99% chance that he is gone. There are many teams in play. Glen Sather is asking a lot for Ryan Callahan.:

On Dan Girardi, “Dan Girardi, the Rangers are still pushing to get him re-signed to keep him away from UFA. My sense is that the Rangers love him and want to keep him. Dan Girardi very much wants to stay with the Rangers so they are just haggling over term and a little bit of money that represents the gap in this negotiation. That being said, Glen Sather is still considering the interest and their remains considerable interest in Dan Girardi. If Girardi isn’t signed by the deadline I am told that there is no chance that the Rangers let him go beyond that without a deal.”

2/25/14: 6:55PM: “I’m told that it’s 99.9% guaranteed that Ryan Callahan will get traded by the New York Rangers. There are many teams involved in this process. We know that the St. Louis Blues have been the most consistent in showing interest. There is some connection to the Tampa Bay Lightning and some other teams as well.” (Darren Dreger on Insider Trading)

On Dan Girardi, “there is an on-going back and forth on Dan Girardi as well. Many predicted that this deal would be done by now to keep Girardi with the Rangers. If he isn’t signed by March 5th, the trading deadline there is also a 99.9% chance that he gets traded. (Darren Dreger on Insider Trading)

“You are right Darren. There were no talks over the Olympic break between the Rangers and Ryan Callahan. There is on-going dialogue with Girardi. It seems to be a little bit of a difference in term, maybe a  little less than $500,000 a year in money but they are working and trying to get that done.  (Bob McKenzie on Insider Trading)

Not nec. I agree relatively tangible more so than tangible, but 1st of all, PK time, blocked shots, hits and +/- are all tangible that are NOT G,A or Pts. 2nd, for true "leadership" value, u can compare and contrast and quantify Cally vs. other leaders around the league just like u can for other scorers. It's very doable, just that some GM's choose to not want to take that into consideration, that's all. I mean, if teams can claim that have no idea what leadership is defined as or worth, how do they name a guy like Cally Captain in the 1st place vs the leading scorer on the team?! Case in point: Gabby has never worn an "A" nor a "C" in his career - not that he should, mind u - but yet he's been a leading goal scorer with us and the Wild. So what I'm saying is u can't have it both ways and somehow magically be able to "quantify" leadership when it comes to wearing a letter, but claim ignorance when it comes to earning potential. Ain't buyin' it. Sorry.

Boomer mentioned del zotto for Klein around a month before it happened. Just saying.....

Unfortunately Marc you have to use tangible statistics when deciphering a player's worth. Callahan is a great heart and soul type of player but the money and length of terms, he is insisting he receive, are that of a top tier offensive player.

That sounds logical to me, but of course, when does logic ever take precedence in Rangerland.

They offered 5 years at 30 mil, he wants 7 years at 42 mil. Let's do 6 years at 36 and get on with it. ( I have to say I do think 5 at 30 is a pretty sweet deal.) I have a bad feeling it's now a matter of principle with Sather.

Agreed, Brandon. But using goals and assists to assess when he IS worth is what I took umbrage with. That's all. As Frank said.

TIME FOR A SATHER TRADE RAPE!!! Everyone bitches about his signings but ever realize his trades pan-out extremely well? We essentially got Nash, Brassard, Moore, and 4th line depth guy Dorsett for Gaborik (always hurt), Dubi (Good but sucked with Torts), Artie (eh?), and Erixon who can't make the NHL. He also got Mactruck for Gomez, Kristo for um nobody? The dude can flat out find value in trades.

This scenario will most likely play out similar to when the Rangers traded Del Zotto. Nothing was mentioned about Kevin Kline as being a possible target, so I expect the same with Callahan. The Rangers will and should trade Callahan to a team that will most likely not even be mentioned as trading partners. By the way, the Rangers should also trade Girardi as his better days (like Callahan) are behind him. If not, it will be like Redden and Drury all over again.

What Callahan excels at isn't worth what he is asking for; it's just that simple.

Actually Marc I think you hit the nail on the head. He wears that C for a reason. @ Brandon he actually is prolific at what he does. He may not be an " elite" scorer but he creates plays and so much more. His " lead by example" play is one example of what he brings to the table. Even Torts said it ( as much as I hate to credit him with anything). Every time he needed someone to come through or something done he look at his bench and the choice was easy it was always Cally. He would do whatever you asked of him.

Ged Doyle
Ged Doyle

not saying hes worth it. he feels he is worth it based on the salary of a player who is in comparison with himself.

if they let messier walk over money they will let him walk to . if he really means what he says that his heart is here with the rangers he will take the 5 year at 6 mill per

Ged Doyle
Ged Doyle

dustin brown signed an 8 year $47 million contract extension with los angeles, and has lower stats than cally. ive always compared the two when it comes to work ethic and leadership. so cally is asking for what he believes is fair to him. with that said, as much as i love cally, i just dont think he fits the AV system

Macacawitz
Macacawitz

Trade him to L.A. for Tyler Toffoli.  Tyler Toffoli is a potential 30+ goal scorer no one knows about.  This would be a steal, and one Ranger fans would rave about.  The scouting report on Toffoli is that he can't skate, can't shoot and can't check.......all he does is score.  Get him, you won't regret it.

Marc Weissman
Marc Weissman

I never said he was. And so Cally isn't a prolific leader, shot-blocker, body-checker, PKer, teammate?

Brandon Augienello
Brandon Augienello

Hank is prolific at what he does; same can't be said for Callahan. He is not an elite player and he wants elite money. I get that he is a fan favorite but if he won't budge, from his asking price, he has to go.

Joe Riccio
Joe Riccio

marc you're off base.he just isn't worth near that money for that term no matter how much u like him

Marc Weissman
Marc Weissman

Yeah, b/c Cally's value and the reason he wears the "C" is b/c of how many points he has. Hank doesn't score either, so maybe we should trade him.

If any team wants to give a player who has only scored more than 50 pts in a season once in a career 6.5 million. All power to them.

Something "real" better be coming back for Captain Cally or this is a bad move for this season.  Rangers may be better off keeping him for the playoff run.....this year is not over and anything can happen in playoffs.

I guess 1 week for the bidding war then. I can't wait to hear about all the offers and deals... more importantly I can't wait for this to be over. So I can 2nd guess the entire trade.

Wish they would do it already its a distraction to the team.

@Michael Stewart I agree 100%! Right now they have value in getting some assets back, that's why they need to be traded now. In the next 2-3 years they will be overpaid unproductive players that the Raners do not need to be handcuffed too. They will have long term deals whose best days are fading away!

Michael Stewart
Michael Stewart

@Macacawitz I understand your interest in Toffoli as he is a very gifted RW. The only problem is that the Kings would need to give a little more in return for Callahan (despite being a possible rented player) and looking at their pool of players/prospects, not sure I see a fit.

Michael Stewart
Michael Stewart

@arc34 GM Glen Sather will do his best to get the most back for Callahan. Keeping Callahan for the remainder of the year knowing that they can not re-sign him would be foolish. There is a ton of talent in the NHL and replacing Callahan will not be as hard as you think and it will not disrupt the Rangers season.

Michael Stewart
Michael Stewart

@LordAl Agreed.....Trading both Callahan and Girardi now, while their value is up will provide the Rangers with a solid return for not only this season, but moving forward in years to come. Pull the trigger Sather and trade them both.

Paul Passadino
Paul Passadino

I wanna keep both which would be a good idea but if we have or want to trade 1 or both what value do you think expiring contracts have little to none b/c there is no guarantee that team will settle on a extension. Unless it's a big improvement which I don't see happening don't trade them do your best to resign them

Paul Passadino
Paul Passadino

I put no faith in glen sather. As we see he always makes the right moves lol. To list a few Richards giant contract, letting prust go and signing that goon brashear, wade redden.

Paul Passadino
Paul Passadino

If they are expiring contracts and past their prime everyone else's words who are posting not mine how is their trade value up and how are we gonna get anything of value in return other than a prospect or a rental of our own

Michael Stewart
Michael Stewart

@Paul Passadino I respectfully disagree with you 100%. Why would you hold one to both if your intention (Glen Sather) is not to re-sign either player at this point. Hold on and get nothing when they walk or trade now and get (from all the reports) equal value back. I hate to break it to you, but the Rangers with their current roster are not winning the Cup this season. Callahan and Girardi have seen their better days, trade them now while their value is up. The Rangers can still get value back (based on all the reports).

Michael Stewart
Michael Stewart

@Paul Passadino How about acquiring McDonagh as part of the package when he traded Gomez. How about signing Gaborik with the $$$ from trading Gomez. How about acquiring Kristo for Thomas. how about signing Dan Girardi when no one else would. how about the Nash trade.. By the way...Prust was not worth $2.5m at the time and only Montreal offered that deal, while other teams interested were offered roughly what the Rangers were offering ($800k to $1.25M)

This is just a couple of examples, Sather overall has done a good job as the Rangers GM.

Ed Zambrano
Ed Zambrano

@Paul Passadino For every bad thing you listed there is a good thing he did. And how can you say "let Prust go?" the dude got an obscene contract from Montreal that Rangers were smart for not matching.

Michael Stewart
Michael Stewart

@Paul Passadino This is based on my opinion and not the entire NHL GM's.  Agree or disagree, my point is that if the Rangers sign either one, they will regret it within 2 years.
