Read: Marty St. Louis on what Dan Boyle can bring to the Rangers

Boyle White9/20/14 | 7:32PM: St. Louis, asked about Boyle today, said “He is an experienced guy that has played at a high level in this league and in many high pressure situations. He is a battler and I know that when you think of Dan Boyle you think of his play with the puck but he is very effective without the puck and gets open and is able to control the pace of the game.” (Lohud, via Soundcloud)

He adds that Boyle is a “savvy” player who Tampa Bay hasn’t been able to replace since they traded him. (Lohud, via Soundcloud)

8/22/14 | 12:34PM: Jeff Gorton says that the Rangers signed Dan Boyle with the intention of him filling roles of players, Brad Richards PP, Anton Stralman defense, that they lost.

Asked about Boyle, St. Louis said that Boyle will add a lot with: (Rangers)

  • “his presence on defense”
  • “his poise”
  • “how he controls the pace of the game”
  • “he can move the puck with the best in the league.”

St. Louis added, “for me, I am glad and I was able to watch him quite a bit in the past 5-6 years playing out West, I would catch his games after our games and I have always been impressed with how he plays the game. When you have him on your team you appreciate what he does but when you get to watch him from a distance, you understand what he brings to the game and I am excited to work with him again.” (Rangers)

I think Boyle will add 20 or so Power Play points and over 30 on the season. He's older now but with a guy like him having the puck teams back off. He will create time and space with good outlet passes to start breakouts and shorten the ice with some home run passes when they're there. Passes many Defenseman won't even attempt.
