Notes: Derek Stepan’s Conference Call

Derek Stepan held a conference call a few minutes again to speak with the media about his new contract.

Stepan told Carp from Rangers Report, Steve Zipay, Pat Leonard and Andrew Gross that:

  • He has been skating with the University of Wisconsin and that he doesn’t feel as if his conditioning is far off.
  • He is flying to NY tonight and will undergo a physical and fitness testing tomorrow, skate on Saturday and then practice with the team on Sunday
  • He has no bitterness about the contract situation taking as long as it did, though he wished it was a process that ended sooner. He added that he got to understand the business side of things as a young player and that things don’t always go as smooth as you think they will.

5:53PM: Stepan told the team’s website that he felt an urgency to get the situation done so that he could be ready to start the season.

He told the NY Times that he was offered this contract on Monday and after talking with his family and his agent he decided that this was as close to where they thought they would end up at. Stepan said that he knew last night he was going to sign today.
